Sounds like a good value Russian. Much like our Golyshev or Minnesota's Kaprizov.

Could be, but Kaprizov was taken in his draft year and has become quite impressive.

Yurtaikin is already 19. But if he can play, then he can play.

As for our Golyshev, he's a true long shot. We drafted him as a 21-year old (didn't really know you could do that anymore?). At 5'8", size isn't optimal (doesn't have to hold him back), but throw in a 27 point drop from last season to this and well, no indication of him being a real prospect at the moment.

We've missed out in this area. There's a lot of talent in Europe. Sweden and Finland especially

I'll assume you - and others - mean in the first round.

I think that the Isles did just that last summer when they took Koivula and Golyshev.

Sure wish they had done it with Buchnevich.:sarcasm:

I was thinking only about the draft position and nationality. I thought Golyshev had a good WJC but looked at his stats now and must have mixed him up with somebody else... Anyway, Yurtalkin would probably be a good value pick.

Milan Jurcina played in over 400 NHL games. I'll take that from a 5th round draft pick.

And he played his last one at 29 years old after playing horribly for 2 years on the Isles because? Also notice, I implied that he would be a WORSE versioin of Milan Jurcina. Jurcina is the utmost ceiling. I'll pass on giving that a contract with our defensive depth. #8 dmen are aplenty.

Just read on article on goalie Linus Soderstrom. He's eligible to come to North America after the Swedish playoffs. His contract is up. And get this, he broke a SHL record for lowest goals against. He had a 1.34 ga, the record was 1.45, by.....drum roll please....Henrik Lundqvist. Not saying he's gonna be as good as him, just saying that's pretty damned good for a 20 or 21 year old goalie. I think he plays a bunch of games for Bridgeport next season and maybe a few for the Isles.

So, can't start calling him the boy King??

Hasn't he been scratched the last two games? Probably resting him for the playoffs, did the same thing last year if I remember correctly.

has the flu

tried to play a couple games ago but left during the anthem

Will be back soon. Seattle is in a battle to win their conference with only a few games back so I don't see Seattle resting him. I expect him back next game

starting to get excited about MDC. 13 points (5G, 8A) and +4 in his past 15 games.

we need more shooters on the team. right now, i count only Nelson and Ladd. Beau looks like he has a decent shot, and CBuck thinks he's shooting on soccer nets.

I was thinking only about the draft position and nationality. I thought Golyshev had a good WJC but looked at his stats now and must have mixed him up with somebody else... Anyway, Yurtalkin would probably be a good value pick.

With our lack of picks (at the moment) and a year in which opinions will differ greatly after spots 1-3, then 4-10, I think you're likely right that the NYI may venture to Russia with the 3rd, 5th or 7th rounders we currently have. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to target a guy like Kostin should they be picking 14th-23rd.

Snow's tendency to take a shot at a Russians has almost become a draft regularity. I almost gotta think they've got another overager like Urakov on their radar as well.

A lot of that may have to do with whether or not they've determined a general interest on behalf of a young Russian to make his way to North America in the next few years?

NOTE:
It's not necessarily a yearly habit, and rather meaningless overall, but I didn't like either the Cammarata or Golyshev picks when they took place (I won't go into the Song pick - that's a separate issue). Dunno... both felt premature, unwarranted and like Snow 'n co. were pulling a 'We know something no one else does' type of thing. Maybe it's just because I saw some boys on the board I personally was reallllly sold on and thought most scouts would be looking to grab at those junctures? Maybe it's because you get the idea that these were players that simply could have been had at a later juncture (always a gamble) and already have size issues that make them highly unlikely?

Kind of hope they don't make another pick before the 5th round where everyone is scrambling to figure out who the heck the guy is and why the team could possibly feel the need to take Player X at that juncture.

Great to see that Quenneville is back in action. Looks like he's gotten 6 points in 6 games, and that although guys rarely jump right back in at the same pace after such a long period on the sidelines.

Vandesompel's defensive role is clearly different with London, but he should have a long spring there. Can he be a MC winner?

Wotherspoon is having a really good year. Look forward to seeing him in Bridgeport next season. I suspect he'll make a good transition.
