That's very wise of you to admit.

Similar to, it would seem, the general expectations of the team from HFCanes members. I'm not going back to look at the "Where will the Canes finish" thread, but the general tenor has been that of low expectations for the year. Then, in the first game, those expectations suddenly skyrocket to the point where an OTL is unacceptable. It's almost like wanting the team to tank at the end of the season and being mad about barely losing a game.

At some point, the rubber (desires/predictions/expectations) has to meet the road (losses), otherwise you have to face the reality that you've been lying to yourself in a very public way.
I think that has more to do with dominating a bad team playing their backup goalie and not being able to capitalize (mostly because we had too much hesitation in those split second decisions) than it is about overall expectations. When it comes to games you "should" win, an OTL is indeed deemed "unacceptable". We wouldn't be having the same conversation if this had been Washington or the Penguins

Outshot our opponent and lost again! Deja Vu. I was a little disappointed in our game lastnight, a little sloppy with too many low scoring chances, tho some good ones, too. I thought Williams looked ok for his fisrt game as capt. He seem a little faster than usual to me. I thought Aho, Svech (for his limited use), and Necas looked good for their 1st stab at it, too. A lot of hope for the season, but needs to be cleaned up some.

The "same Canes hockey" shit is absurd. Fortunately others have commented already, but last night's "domination" was polar opposite of the Peters era "domination". Guys going to the middle of the ice, tons of HQ scoring opportunities, taking risks, etc was so refreshing to watch. If they played every game like that they're in the playoffs.

I don't understand what's happened with Faulk. He used to be so good at using his positioning on the boards, keeping his head up and making a clean, safe outlet (a la Pesce). Now, he wins that positioning battle but blindly throws the puck anywhere. Someone needs to get him to get calm the f*** down and take the extra millisecond to think. Physically he looked much better and seemed to have better general awareness without the puck, but with it in his own end... yikes.

Others have talked about some invisible players, but I didn't see anyone mention McGinn. He seems stuck in the Peters system and desperately needs to break out of it.

And as good as our defense looked, I thought that was mostly attributable to the forwards. Peters used to talk a lot about how the forwards needed to engage more in their own end, it just took him leaving for them to finally do it.

I wasn't overly impressed with Hamilton in the preseason, and last night didn't change much. I don't know, maybe my expectations were off.

All in all, great first showing and I'm really impressed with what RBA has done so far.

I don't think anyone actually said that this game was a lot like Peters hockey. Just comments on the emotional parallels of seeing the team take multiples more shots than their opponent and somehow still end up almost getting shut out by an "inferior" team and ultimately losing in the flattest, most disappointing fashion.

I was thinking about this over my morning coffee. Part of the promise of Young Faulk was that he would mature and play a smarter game. Somehow he has gotten dumber. I don't know how that happens. It's like his hockey IQ is actually on a decline, which makes no logical sense at all.

Lemme try to make sense of it. Justin has always been not smart. When he was younger, he didn't know he was not smart, so he just did stuff. Now that he's older, he realizes he's not smart, and he tries to think about things. But you can't do that in the NHL. It's better to just do things and not think, even if you're not smart. I think Justin should dumb his game down to the absolute basics and allow his instincts to take over. Strip it all down and just play hockey, like he did when he was a kid. It honestly can't get any worse.

My theory is that he's been taking passing advice from Justin Williams.

I think we got a ton of attempts in the dead slot- you can see the orange over the red before the color blends in with the red in the logo.

For reference, here is a Bill Peters heat map.

(Out shot, out chanced the Isle, lost 3-0)

If I could like a post more than once, I would like this one multiple times.
