Milkha Singh nearly won the bronze in the 400m in Rome. Should have done better and passed away this year. I suppose there is a focus on children to do well academically rather than sport. It's still frowned for women to take part in sport although that seems to be changing.
There is the obsession with cricket. Field hockey is undergoing a resurgence. There is a scattering of tennis players, golfers, badminton players, wrestlers and boxers but the underlying picture is years of neglect and sport treated as a secondary consideration. A lack of facilities at all levels and coaches too.
Under the Congress party this seems to have been the norm. But the new VJP and their effort to propel India forward economically, militarily and the rivalry with China has also seen more of an effort put into sport. More regional facilities, more coaches, more financial reward, companies offering paid time off and so on and so forth.
There is a definite improvement in results at the Asia Games and that in time will translate into the world stage but compared to the overall population current spending is miniscule for example in comparison to China and the USA. Certain states in India like the Punjab and Kerala also seem to be more forward thinking and also have invested more in sport and provide more of the athletes.
