Sports betting has passed legislation. Will be legal January 7th, 2024 in NC. You know Dundon will have a makeshift sports book ready to go in PNC on that date.

Hopefully, this doesn't destroy the tailgating experience....

Of course, the Big money/lobbyists win (I love how everything is couched as "supporting schools" as if the Legislature is going to make these revenues additive) but highly doubtful that the State (reported $20M is not big $) & it's residents win.

Plenty of land around. Enough to build an entertainment district and still have spots for tailgating.

Dundon said on 99.9 the other day that if all the other arena stakeholders agree he'd want to put the sportsbook in the old ticket office space, which they don't need anymore, and that they may bump the exterior out a bit too.

Won't even come close to affecting tailgating. Though if they bump out, the Eye desperately needs more breathing room too.

He also mentioned a long term entertainment district, but my guess is they'd use the space between Carter Finley and the arena for that, at least to start. Maybe they'll extend towards Wade Park at some point. Either way, I can't imagine much reduction of tailgating space.

I saw a Q&A last week where one of the guys who leads design and merchandising for the Canes said that expanding The Eye is one of the first things they'll do once they get the green light for expansion. The team knows its missing out on a lot of retail sales because they have to pick and choose which items to have on the shelves in their own team store because of its size. In fact, from what he was saying, its the smallest flagship store in the NHL, so its a priority to address. Expanding will allow all player jerseys to be available for purchase in the arena, among many other opportunities we're currently not able to address.

Why can't we have a better team store? On any given game, there are only around 3-4 player jerseys. I've been to other stadiums and their stores have a much larger footprint and have jerseys for every single one of the players. - @dpalmy4172

For the most part, space is the biggest issue. I think our fans will be excited to hear that as we're going through our arena enhancements, which are hopefully coming within the next few years, one of the earliest projects is going to be an enhanced and much larger footprint in the retail store.

That's going to give us the opportunity to stock more player jerseys, more colors, more sizes, and actually have the opportunity to showcase the full line, along with our other products as well.

Right now space is at a premium. We have one of, if not the smallest, main team stores in the NHL. But when we have a team store that is much larger in square footage, it's going to allow us to do those things.

But wait. It’s only going to be with Fanatic merchandise so more space may not mean more sales. :)

Not only do they lack the space to display their full run of merch, I really think they miss out on sales because the store is so badly overcrowded. During intermissions and post-game it’s routine to see 50+ people waiting just to get in the door, and once you get inside it’s shoulder-to-shoulder mayhem. It’s a deeply unpleasant experience for everyone and completely inaccessible for some fans (e.g. elderly, disabled, kid in stroller) and I’m certain that a lot of people take one look at the line and are like “nah, I’m not doing that”.

I like how Dallas has it set up. The plaza in front of the arena has storefronts which includes the team store. That allows it to be much more spacious, helps separate it from the arena crowd, and makes it much more accessible. With their setup, it actually makes some sense for a non-ticketholder to come soak in the pregame atmosphere, have dinner at one of the restaurants while watching the game on TV, buy souvenirs from the team shop, and stick around for the postgame. That kind of interaction isn’t possible at PNC, where there’s no point showing up without a ticket.

I usually get to come down for four to five games a year. Because I'm out of market and come to so few, I'm usually itching to buy some merch. But probably 80% of the time I go in, I don't get a good enough chance to closely look at things before getting annoyed or uncomfortable, and then leave. It'd be great if they can get it to a point you can move around at least a little.

I will say though, up where I am and get to go to Caps games, I don't think their main store feels any bigger at all and it's just as miserable of an experience.
