I've thought about this too, not only in the NHL but other leagues. I would imagine their annual salary is a lot lower than we'd like to believe.

I dunno- I think I could afford to take fan abuse in a hockey season for 100 grand a year

Additionally, they get about 13.5k per playoff round. Subs get less.

It makes sense, other sports the refs don't do nearly as much. Basketball they run back and forth, but skating and stopping is far harder on the legs then jogging down the court. Football has at least 10 refs so paying them 6 figures would be a million$ per 16 games. Umps just kind of stand there.
