I've thought about this too, not only in the NHL but other leagues. I would imagine their annual salary is a lot lower than we'd like to believe.

Quick google search came up with an askmen article.

A snippet thereof...

Incidentally, while the National Hockey League's (NHL) athletes make less than their brethren in football, basketball and baseball, no other officials in any of the four major sports leagues make more than those in the NHL, where starters get a $115,000 salary. After a 15-year career, an NHL referee may be looking at an annual pay upwards of $220,000.

It makes sense, other sports the refs don't do nearly as much. Basketball they run back and forth, but skating and stopping is far harder on the legs then jogging down the court. Football has at least 10 refs so paying them 6 figures would be a million$ per 16 games. Umps just kind of stand there.
