Sad to see Toro go but with Diaz coming back as the utility man and Bregman nearing a return, he was expendable (and 1 of few trade chips they have). And as much as I wanted Joe Smith to have a chance at a World Series, he was sucking and probably would have been designated for assignment to clear a 40 man roster spot. With that said, glad to get Graveman. And hopefully Strom can fix the other guy. Click talked big and backed it up. Hopefully more to come.

Graveman soon the be free agent and 4 years of control for Toro. Seager could be gone so Toro is the replacement. Apparently Mariners players pissed about the trade which is understandable.

I’d break it down as Smith for Graveman and Montero for Toro.

Graveman is an upgrade on Smith, but Seattle is getting out of a bad deal and getting a utility Infielder. Houston is banking on getting the Montero before the signing.

But why do you have to give your division rival your lights-out closer especially considering that many teams out there are looking for quality relief pitching.

Toro sucks. Graveman probablynis the best reliever in the game right now. Bad trade.

mariners gonna mariners

i didn't realize how good graveman has been this year. why on earth would you deal him to a division rival when you're right there in the WC race? and for a below average 3B in toro and a 37 year old reliever? makes absolutely zero sense

What's truly baffling is it's not like they got some great prospect out of this deal either, Toro's basically a AAAA player. They didn't even save money either.

Best reliever in the game? Holy sample size, Batman! He’s been on the dl, what, twice??

He is having a great season, but this isn’t Chapman in his prime lol

I obviously don’t think this is horrible from a baseball pov, but camaraderie exists and while unquantifiable, it is very valuable. Ballsy move by Dipoto, and it will make or break his run there.

“He’s up in his suite playing fantasy baseball” is the best line ever.

Smith had a scoreless inning and Toro had a pinch hit 2 run homerun(although Tucker maybe should have had it).

Also Kevin Goldstein who used to work for the Astros said teams have liked and asked for Toro the last 2 years.

Joe Smith has been a good bullpen arm for years. The only loss to Seattle’s bullpen was Graveman, and they have Sewald and Stuckenmayer to pitch late, as well. Montero was a complete dump so it’s hard to expect them to get much more than a guy like Toro for him.

Dipoto obviously didn’t gauge the locker room before making the deal, though. You can’t break a hot teams heart.
