The latest Kentucky Derby futures
(Source: HorseRacingNation)

With Bob Baffert suspended from Churchill Downs, owners will have to decide if they want to keep certain horses now tied to Baffert with the trainer or not. If they do, the horses are ineligible for the Derby. A shift in trainers for the Derby preps and eventually the race in May will determine fates.

Some very sad news:

Bob Baffert literally gets away with murder over and over again. How many of his horses have broken down in the last 10 years? How many have failed drug tests?

ZERO reason for an otherwise healthy 3 year old horse to have a heart attack while working 5 furlongs. Guy should be barred from the sport nationally... But instead he gets a suspension from Kentucky, that can't be upheld in New York even though NYRA does the right thing (for once) and California racing just won't give two shits.

I guess we’ll have to await the report. Takes longer than if there was an injury. Those questions about the betamethasone won’t go away.

The death of Medina Spirit is another blight on the sport that overshadows the wonderful people and thrills horses give the viewers and staff employees. A heart attack is different than a breakdown. Despite the attention and nurturing provided by countless individuals, the loss of one equine animal hurts and will be emphasized due to the horse's Kentucky Derby win and certainly the issue with samples.

The safety and protection are imperative aspects. While we don't know the circumstances, it is difficult to explain this as unrelated to ongoing litigation and sampling. The breeding of T-breds is directly related to the sport of horse racing. Without racing, the breed becomes extinct. There are the ancillary factors such as jobs, too.

Just as an aside, why is it some of the best tracks have some of the worst simulcast graphics?

Oaklawn is a tremendously popular track. The new graphics are too condensed. I wonder if these tracks conduct focus groups with real horse players to determine color schemes and fonts. The copper (if that is the color) and blue combo is acceptable but the layout at the bottom is too compact. Also, who in their right mind put dark red on navy blue for such things as scratches?

Again, Hawthorne in Illinois has one of the best color schemes. Why not put white on a dark color background? Odds change quickly but more so the amount of betting interests is abundant, and it is imperative to be able to read such things clearly. Style and size of fonts is important.

The Stronach Tracks ruined their feeds with the color co-ordinated themes at the various tracks: sea green for Santa Anita, pinkish for Laurel, butternut yellow for Golden Gate, etc.

Interesting observations.

Conducting focus groups on horse players issues. Would make sense.
Probably why I’ve never heard it done anywhere.
Racetrack management from my experience doesn’t want any feedback.

Speaking of graphics.
You are correct. White on a black background is ideal.
Good contrast and easy on the eyes.

Fairgrounds has a purple graphics board because of New Orleans.
Looks like a clown show.

Why can’t all tracks have both the exacta and DD listed on the bottom
of the screen like New York does.
Nothing more frustrating than to have wait to see one or the other every
3 or 4 minutes. You should be able to see both.

Thanks. Maybe at one of the racing seminars this is discussed.

The now-defunct Portland Meadows in Oregon had the black and white with a little gray as I recall. Easy on the eyes. Canterbury in Minnesota is just the opposite -- overly colorful and can be challenging.

I wrote Hawthorne to praise and their track announcer Jim Miller responded to me a couple or so years ago when the track underwent a graphics upgrade. He thanked me and mentioned how the handicapper was taken into consideration.

I was comfortable with the colors (white, black orangey-yellow) at Laurel but more so the fonts before the current setup which isn't ugly just less preferred.

Just a guess but uniformity would be something difficult as tracks promote individual betting options. Some not all have rolling doubles.

Certain colors belong together but some not so much. The "scratch" designation in dark red on navy blue at Oaklawn should never have made it past stage one.

Keeneland has white on tan for some graphics. Again, why?! Black on tan would be much better or white on black.

I prefer the P# and odds on the left rather than the bottom of the screen. NYRA does the bottom properly since the odds are under the horse's number but some -- Keeneland for instance -- scrunched that data onto one line. In fuller fields, there is almost no gap between numbers and odds. Without the benefit of the numbered colors (red for 1, white for 2, blue for 3, etc....)
1 5 2 20 3 6 4 2 5 7-2 6 40... and so on.

At least on the left of the screen, it reads:
1 5
2 20
3 6
4 2
5 7-2
6 40
7...
8...
and so on.

You’re right about Keenelands graphics. It was tough to read both the win odds and also the exotic prices.

Tampa Bay’s new graphics are good. Green on white.

Tomorrow’s entries at Gulf. Only have 2 turf races listed.
Which is good. Limiting the turf races during the week in the early part of a long
meet is good. The weather is supposed to be good all week. Green, green grass.

Fair Grounds has a 10/3 dirt/turf breakdown on a 13-race card Saturday almost exclusively $100,000+ purses.

Really? Looked the same as the past to me. Green as the main color. I heard the website was enhanced but the simulcast feed looked similar to the recent meet.

Update: I see what you mean. Some info has changed.

Robby Albarado is retiring following Saturday's seventh race at Turfway. He is 48 and has won more than 5,000 races. He won the Peakness with Swiss Skydiver in 2020.

@Marco 85

See what you think of the graphics at Mahoning Valley. I generally approve. The colors and fonts work well. It isn't a primary track of interest but it has its merits. Yes, black and white and in this instance bronze/copper with the main color.

$500 million+ bet at Woodbine in 2021 is third highest in track history. Racing days: 99. Roughly $5 mill. per.

Aqueduct handled $154 million over 15 days during it's annual Fall Meet. The average of $10.2 million per day is 11% better than 2020 and 25% more than 2019.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph had a 3-win day. He sent out four horses.
Friday, December 10, 2021

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Juan Vazquez was a perfect 4-for-4 today. He is/was mainly a mid-Atlantic trainer at Parx, Delaware, Laurel, etc. but for almost anyone not named Chad Brown or Todd Pletcher or that level to go 4-for-4 at a NYRA track will raise eyebrows.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

  • Race 8: Matching 27-to-1 shots finished 1-2 and produced a $2 exacta worth $938.
  • Race 4: Sancocho (Madeline Rowlands/Juan Arriagada), a Mexican-bred, gave the jockey her first career win with her ninth mount. She is a Maryland-raised 18-year-old who was riding in steeplechase races. And she was duly feted in traditional honors following her first win.

  • Gerald Bennett is now atop the trainers' standings with four wins after a rough start. He is just 4-for-30 however.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph added two wins to his yearly total and has become a trainer to consider in almost every instance at Gulf. He has won with six of his past 10 starters this meet and has a record of 37 10-4-3. The second winningest trainer at the meet has three victories.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 4: Past Post (Chel-c Bailey/John Haran) won. The jockey is a former MMA participant. The trainer would finish the day 2-for-2.
  • Race 7: Pats Property (Kelsi Harr/John Haran) won at 45-to-1. The same rider closed Sunday's card with a $122 winner. She is an Arkansas-native and was ecstatic in the winners' circle. It's Oaklawn baby!
  • Race 8: Hollis (Ricardo Santana, Jr./John Ortiz) upset Nashville (Florent Geroux/Steve Asmussen) in a race that caught the attention of many and a win that culminated with a track record for the distance. Nashville, purchased for $460,000 and a possible Breeders' Cup horse, won his first three starts but was not out since losing a Grade I December 26, 2020 at Santa Anita. He was sent off 2-to-5 today. Santana beat Asmussen. If there is a dispute/rivalry between the former guaranteed teammates, it just got more interesting.
  • Race 9: Upandcomingstar (Ramon Vazquez/Steve Asmussen) won the finale at 4-to-1. You can't keep Asmussen down too long. Terranova (John Hiraldo/Brian Williamson) placed at 76-to-1 as the longest odds on the board.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 8: Professors' Pride (Juan Hernandez/Eddie Truman) was sent off the co-favorite and won the $100,000 Soviet Problem Stakes. The buck stops here.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $11 million.
  • Race 9: The two longest shots on the board -- 63-to-1 and an 82-to-1 -- finished second and third, respectively.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 11: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $407,000. One winning ticket was credited.
  • Race 10: Officiating (Luis Saez/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) won the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at 7-to-1. Joseph has won six of the past nine races in which he has entered.

  • Junior Alvarado rode three winners. He was amongst the earliest New York jockeys to head to Gulfstream and it has worked out well for him so far.
  • Handle: $12.6 million.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Jay Bernardini, the runaway leading trainer at Mountaineer, had a winner today with his lone starter and is 4 3-1-0 the past two racing days here.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Brittany Vandenberg sent out three horses and two won. She has won with four of five starters the past three days including a win at Turfway. She is winning at a 31% clip and in-the-money 64% of the time in 2021, her third year of training, number comparable to her career.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Race 12: Buckley Bunny (Kevin Smith/Steven Flint) won the $100,0000 Louisiana Champions Day Lassie Stakes and paid $188.40. That isn't the highest win payout in North America this year but it is among the tops.
  • Race 13: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $33,000. The $.50 Pick 4 returned over $65,000.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Flavien Prat-Bob Baffert went 4 3-1-0 as a team.
  • Race 9: Slow Down Andy (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Los Alamitos Futurity and with it received the 10 points towards entry into the 2022 Kentucky Derby. Messier (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert), purchased for $470,000 and Barossa (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), purchased for $775,000, finished second and third, respectively. The winner is 3 2-10-0 lifetime and bred in California.

  • Race 8: Doppelganger (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert), an Into Mischief 2-year-old colt purchased for $570,000, debuted to a victory.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $9 million.
  • Chalky Day: Mostly chalk winning and on a day that began with a 13-to-1 nosing an 11-to-1 for victory.
  • Alisa Morrison is an apprentice from New Brunswick, Canada, who has been exercising horses in Kentucky. She placed in the first two races today, nearly winning for the second time in her career in the opener. Her only lifetime win came in 2019 at Fort Erie (Ontario).
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Race 5: Bret's At Caddies (Guillermo Rodriguez/Jay Bernardini) placed as the favorite. He is a 10-year-old out for the 92nd time. That is a warrior. Owned by the trainer.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas, one of the top local riders, is out until March as he is scheduled to have a procedure done on his left shoulder.
  • Race 10: Cryptic Creed (Jesus Rios/Michael Lightner) won at 21-to-1. I am unfamiliar with the trainer who last won in 2014. He has been dormant since then, though this was his fourth horse sent out in 2021.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • E.T. Baird won twice, the second provided him with his 2,500th victory. He is a Hall of Fame rider at the track, inducted in local ceremonies 23 years ago.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Graphics: Subpar. Discussed was the condensed look at the screen's bottom but not having the odds on the screen during the race is disturbing. Such a popular track and certainly one of my favorites, the scrutiny is justified.
  • Race 2: Mo Choctaw (Ramon Vazquez/John Prather, Jr.) shot out of the gate and won his maiden race by more than 11 lengths in a powerful performance. He led by three lengths at the 1/4 pole.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $50,000.
  • Kelsi Harr: Woo. She doesn't win often but when she does, she has a flair for the dramatic. The Arkansas native who I mentioned a few days ago has a sweet pair of bombs ($122 and $92) already attached to her season. Show me a jockey whose last three wins have been 60-to-1, 45-to-1 and 27-to-1 all within three racing days. Today, she won at 9-to-1 and then after a long review put last due to aggressive riding. I dunno, I saw it differently as she was faulted for something in the backstretch. However, with her next mount, she won at 27-to-1. Sweet retribution. :thumbu:  These are some of the more sedate comments:

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Closing Day: Today was closing day of the brief meet. Southern Cal is dark to live racing for T-breds until Santa Anita opens its extensive meet on December 26.
  • Champion Rider: Abel Cedillo with nine wins.
  • Champion Trainer: Bob Baffert with five wins.

Sad story with the deaths and damage due to tornadoes. Best wishes to those affected. The horse tracks in the area were spared but plenty in the racing community have pledged to assist.

Carlo Vaccarezza
is a generous man known for his training as well as being a restaurant proprietor. He recently moved into the Lexington, KY area with his second Frank & Dino's (the other being near Boca Raton).

FGbgEcIUUAE8tuZ

Mattress Mack (Jim McIngvale) -- owner of Runhappy and more -- is also assisting as is his norm from Texas.

The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association is organizing a GoFundMe fundraiser and among the donations is from the Jockey Club for $25,000.

Positive vibes at Colonial Downs (VA) since the track was saved from the wrecking ball. The number of race days for 2022 will increase from 21 to 27 with dates from July 11 – Sept. 7. Daily average purse will rise from $522,000 in 2021 to an expected $600,000 in 2022. More than $2.2 million was bet per day in 2021.

The track has the widest turf course and the second longest dirt course (to Belmont) in the US.

Colonial Downs operated 1997 - 2014 but was then shut with the prospect of redevelopment until resurfacing in 2019.
