Flightline's feat -- three wins in three starts by a combined 37 lengths -- has been documented with yet another figure. Only six horses have received 100+ Beyer Figures for their first three starts since 2004. Flightline received a North America high for 2021 with a 118 in his most recent race.

His 112.33 average through three races is the highest for any horse in North America since 2004.

  • Steve Asmussen is 418 wins shy of 10,000. He is second to Todd Pletcher in all-time purse money with over $372 million earned. No trainer has won 10,000 in a career in North America. Asmussen will likely do it in 2022 barring unforeseen events.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Reminder: Mandatory Payout in the Philly Big 5 on Wednesday. It should pass half a million dollars.
  • Handle: $4.5 million.
  • Frankie Pennington rode three winners.
  • Jamie Ness trained three winners. Ness has the third most wins among all trainers this year in North America.
  • Paco Lopez failed to hit the board with four of his five mounts. His 321 wins this year is second most among all riders in North America.
  • Race 7: Jakarta (Mychal Sanchez/Michael Trombetta) wired the field at 15-to- 1 -- cold on the board as a 5-to-1 morning line -- to win the $100,000 Mrs. Claus Stakes. The win ended a streak of five straight favorites to win on this card.

  • Race 8: Why Why Paul Why (Kendrick Carmouche/Penny Pearce) won the $100,000 Kris Kringle Stakes. The locally based trainer finished 1st and 3rd.

  • Race 9: Dreams Untold (Frankie Pennington/John Servis) won the $100,000 Blitzen Stakes.

More than $1.5 million added to the Philly Big 5, which increased the existing jackpot past $2 million.

Philly handled over $6 million today in the season finale.

No favorite won any of the five races in the Philly Big 5.

Each winning handicapper received over $7,800.

The 2022 season opener at Parx is January 3.

Breeders Cup officials meeting confirmed $182 million bet that weekend last month at Del Mar set an all-time record.

Also discussed was various viewing habits including online streaming and simulcast. NBCSN will no longer exist and substitute TV may go to USA, CNBC or a combo for the Friday part of the 2022 event at Keeneland.

Who hosts in 2023 is still unknown. Santa Anita is my guess and then if Churchill Downs hasn't further aggravated the industry, a return there for 2024.

January 1 will have three Kentucky Derby preps and each is worth 10 points to the winners.
  • The Jerome is at Aqueduct.
  • The Smarty Jones is the first of four to be held at Oaklawn.
  • The Sham is at Santa Anita. Sham finished second to Secretariat in the 1973 Kentucky Derby and is the answer to one of sports most interesting trivia questions in "Who ran the second fastest Kentucky Derby in history?" Sham is often forgotten as a non-winner of the race.

Sloppy track conditions at Aqueduct.

Laurel is listed as muddy.

Gulfstream is fast and firm.

The Louisiana tracks have yet to post.

Oaklawn and Tampa Bay are not scheduled to race today.

Santa Anita canceled due to rain in southern Cal.

  • REMINDER: All horses turn a year older tomorrow despite their date of birth.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Michael Wright is 4 4-0-0 this meet after another victory today. He is based at Woodbine (Ontario) and today won with a Canadian rider Isabelle Wenc.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 8: Secret Oath (Luis Contreras/Wayne Lukas) won in a thriller. The filly was out for the fourth time. She is a daughter to Arrogate who died young and we will never know his value as a sire. One of the greatest horses of the past 50 years.
Sunland (New Mexico):
  • Opening Day: The track last conducted a race on March 15, 2020. The meet consists of a mixture of quarter horse and thoroughbred racing for a 55-day meet that runs through Sunday, April 3, 2022.
Santa Anita (California):
  • John Velazquez-Bob Baffert teamed four times and came up a winner on each occasion. Three horses made their debuts, all four won for the first time and with the exception of the winner in the opener the others are 2 years old.
  • John Velazquez, trying the west coast for a rare time, is 16 9-1-3 (56%/81%). He has become the go-to rider for Bob Baffert.
  • Race 1: Distractedprincess (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) walloped the field by 13 lengths in winning at 1-to-5 in a maiden race. Purchase price: $385,000. It was the start of something special for the rider-trainer. The winner will be 4 years old tomorrow.

  • Race 4: McLaren Vale (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) got into a stretch battle with B Dawk (Umberto Rispoli/Doug O'Neill) but held on for victory in a maiden performance. Purchase price: $625,000.

  • Race 6: Wharton (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) was one of two first-time starters for the trainer -- the other Armagnac (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) finished third -- in winning by more than five lengths at 4-to-1. Wharton was a $475,000 purchase and out for the first time.

FH-SG_ZVkAA0GQ4

  • Race 7: Flying Drummer (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert), who may have been the bet of the day, won at 4-to-5 by more than five lengths to complete a 4-for-4 day for the jockey-trainer tandem. The Gun Runner colt was out for the fourth time and got his first win. Flying Drummer was purchased for $850,000.

January 1, 2022 (part 1)

(THREE KENTUCKY DERBY PREPS)

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Track Conditions: Sloppy. Fog interfered with part of the broadcast, too.
  • Race 8: Courvoisier (Jose Ortiz/Kelly Breen) was sent off 4-to-1 and won the $150,000 Jerome Stakes which was a Kentucky Derby prep race. The winner received 10 points towards entry into the Derby. He was purchased for $600,000 in 2019. The son of Tapit has won twice in five starts and is 2-for-2 at Aqueduct. The race was first run in 1866 and was the 152nd edition. The most recent winner of this race to get a victory in the Kentucky Derby was Fusiachi Pegasus in 2000.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

  • Race 9: Dash Attack (David Cohen/Kenny McPeek) was sent off 7-to-1 and won the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes which is the first of four Kentucky Derby preps to be run at the track. The winner received 10 points towards entry into the Derby. The son to Munnings was out for just the second time. He was one of just two in the field of 13 out for the second time.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: Newgrange (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) was sent off 5-to-2 and won the $100,000 Grade 3 Sham Stakes which is a Kentucky Derby prep race. The winner does not receive the 10 points normally awarded since Baffert is under a 2-year suspension to all Churchill Downs' properties. T-bred owners will have to make a decision, if the ban remains, as to whether to keep horses under Baffert's tutelage or send to other barns in order to gain entry into the Derby. Rockefeller (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) placed as the 3-to-2 favorite. The winner was purchased for $125,000 while the runnerup was bought for $750,000 by the same conglomerate as the winner.

January 1, 2022 (part 2) -- more to come

Laurel (Maryland)

  • Track Conditions: Sloppy. Fog interfered with part of the broadcast, too.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Pablo Morales had a 5-win day. He finished 8 5-1-1. He won both the early and late daily doubles, a rarity in itself.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luis Saez won the first three races. He should be a lock to be a finalist for Eclipse Jockey of the Year for 2021.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Bob Baffert entered six races the past two days and won all six. He officially went 9 6-1-1.
  • Flavien Prat had an exceptional day even by his standards. He had a 6-win afternoon and finished 10 6-4-0. First or second on all 10 mounts, riding an entire card is almost unthinkable.

  • Race 2: Queen of Thorns (Flavien Prat/Peter Eurton) was absolutely brilliant in her maiden race and I am officially smitten. This was my pick of the day but at 4-to-5 offered little value; however, Violence on the male side out of an Unbridled's Song mare caught my eye and she looked picturesque in her win and also following the victory. Wow!

  • Race 6: Chewing Gum (Umberto Rispoli/Bill Mott) won the Grade2 $250,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes.
  • Race 8: Luck (Flavien Prat/Richard Baltas) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Robert Frankel Stakes.
  • Race 9: As Time Goes By (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 3 $200,000 LaCanada stakes.
