Interesting article and column in The Gazette about the 1976 West German National team tour of Canada:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=IfUhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9aEFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=4340,363529

Nice description of Kühnhackl's play by Murray Williamson:

"The first time you see him, you laugh to yourself and think he's too big to make it as a hockey player. He looks like a basketball player on skates. And then you start to watch his moves. His strength. The way he sets up plays and shoots, and most of all the way he skates. For a guy with a reach like Wilt Chamberlain his speed is amazing. In the Olympics he was going around defencemen like they were rooted to the spot."

Column about a Soviet team 19 - 24 year olds that had completed an exhibition tour playing US College teams:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=iJItAAAAIBAJ&sjid=kp0FAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=7382,2757824

Column explores the changing Soviet game and the difficulties for US university trained players transitioning to the NHL or pro hockey.

Very interesting comments. U.S. national coach Connie Pleban:

"I was amazed at their progress. They're strong on their feet and they don't bowl over. They've learned to bodycheck. Our guys would go into the corner with them and they'd come out with the puck. They'd wear our guys out by just leaning on them."

The comments about rule differences are certainly true though.

Among of the players on the young Soviet team (coached by Nikolay Epshtein and Dmitry Boginov) were Viktor Konovalenko, Vitaly Davydov, Eduard Ivanov, Valery Nikitin, Vladimir Yurzinov and Anatoly Firsov.

Also interesting: A comment by Lynn Patrick from 1958.

"Those European teams play book hockey. Their pass patterns are uniform and you know where the puck is going to go. They aren't capable of improving as they go along."

The ability to "improvise" is highlighted several times in the publications of Anatoly Tarasov.

Further

^^^ Comment about Soviets being strong on their feet. Definitely skated with a better understanding or application of their center of gravity.

Times when I think that the Europeans paid greater attention to the words of Dink Carroll, Lynn Patrick and other NA commentators than NA readers did.

Improvising. Good lesson for modern hockey players. Game is too predictable.

Yes, you could buy a used QHL team - Chicoutimi for $35,000 in 1955, used, some renovations required. Coach not included.

... that would be the equivalent in todays dollars with inflation of app $308,000. Its estimated that AHL
franchises (2015) are worth anywhere from $2.5M~$4.5M.... ECHL franchises (Expansion Fee) at $475,000.

Some recognizable players.Young team, not one player over 30, rare for the QHL.

Travel and a shrinking local economy were a problem.

Survived until the demise of the QHL after the 1958-59 season. No elite level hockey in the area until the QMJHL expanded about 15 seasons later.

Women's Hockey

Some early hockey violence.
Player hitting another over head with stick, that got the courts involved.
Player had to be assisted from ice and placed under the care of a physician. Feb 1914 - Boundary Hockey League.

Placed under a $100 bond.
Player fined $20 and costs.

Women's hockey getting prime ice time in 1914 is worth noting. Close game.

1950-51 British Hockey

January 25, 1951. The Gazette, Dink Carroll's column features a few paragraphs about the state of British Hockey. Telling is that almost a generation after the success of British Hockey in the thirties, not recognizable British players had emerged, contrary to the situation in other parts of Europe - Czechoslovakia, USSR start-up, etc.

Does anyone have any good newspaper sources on the Toronto area for say 1895–1910?

Seems like there's not a lot of T papers on the Google Archive.

Microfilm

Many libraries have Toronto newspapers on microfilm - BanQ in Montreal being one, although expect Quebec public dollars to be used to digitalize Toronto papers is a stretch.. Canadian Federal archives are being digitalized and eventually the Toronto papers will show-up

1921 The Dufresne Case

Re-instatement of amateur status was a contentious issue. In 1921 the Dufresne case went to trial.

December 1, La Patrie, 1957 Phil Seguin produces a sampling of SOG data late in his column - Billy Harris was the leader. Body of the column features details about how Lynn Patrick and Milt Schmidt re-united the Uke Line in Boston.

La Patrie - Recherche d'archives de Google Actualités

The SOG data and the recently released partial archival NHL data indicates that there is much more to come.
