So what -- we'll give up a 1st rounder (at least) to dump Pettersson, and use that cap space for what?

Because losing a 1st or whatever assets we need to use as a sweetener to get a team to take Pettersson would gut whatever package we would try to put together for another impact player in trade.

A big cap dump like Pettersson or Zucker would only have made sense before free agency when we could have used that money to go after a big fish. They're all signed now.

It would not take a first rounder to move Pettersson's contract at all. That's absurd.

There are still a few teams with holes on defense. You may not get a prospect back, but you could send Pettersson and a mid-round pick for a fringe roster player making $1.5 million or so to save $2.5 million. There'd be little issue burying such a player in the minors for a negligible cap hit.

You could then add a guy like Danny DeKeyser - who comes with some health and quality of play risk - as a safety net in case POJ/Smith fall flat.

You could also pocket the savings to see what you need at the deadline.

It's a moot point. The Pens won't do it.
