Here is the thread we make every year. Compare your draft wounds and victories to your NHL counterparts. Quite a mixed bag for the Capitals this year with a few risers and a few not taken.

Sam Reinhart (1st, 2nd Overall) - NHL (1st, 2nd Overall to Buffalo) +0

Hunter Smith (2nd, 57th Overall) - NHL (2nd, 54th Overall to Calgary) +3

Nick Magyar (3rd, 61st Overall) - NHL (4th, 93rd Overall to Colorado) -32

Blake Clarke (4th, 99th Overall - NHL (Undrafted) -1000

Brandon Montour (4th, 109th Overall) - NHL (2nd, 55th Overall to Anaheim) +54

Antti Kalapudus (7th, 182nd Overall) - NHL (Undrafted) -1000

Alexis Pepin (7th, 195th Overall) - NHL (4th Round, 114th Overall to Colorado) +81

Bonus: Jaedon Descheneau (6th Round, 156th Overall in 2013) - NHL (5th Round, 124th Overall to St. Louis) +32

I didn't really expect Kalapudus to be drafted. I didn't even expect to draft him, but Blake Clarke being passed over was interesting to me. Not even a late round bone for what he did the season before last. I suppose in the age of reentry it's not entirely surprising to see players passed over who had a rough season to put it mildly. Encouraged by the jumps made by Pepin and Montour. Hunter Smith was such an obvious Calgary pick that it's humorous. Great to see a 6th round pick from last year that went undrafted get picked in a higher slot than I took him last season. And some heart for those of us that had players undrafted again. It seems more and more we're getting these kind of players coming back and getting drafted for us a season later.

For the Flames

# 18 - Dylan Larkin - 15th to Detroit +3
# 39 - Justin Kirkland - 62nd to Nashville -23
# 90 - Tyler Bird - 137th to Columbus -47
#180 - Wallterri Hopponen - Undrafted
#184 - Brian Bowen - Undrafted
#187 - Nick Wolff - Undrafted

Pretty happy because the players who were drafted went to good developers.

Kirkland I knew was a reach - and mentioned to a few people I thought he would go 50-60 and thats about where he went.

Bird - I half expected not to even be drafted. So good news there.

For Columbus:

We reached across the board, and as expected, half of our (small) 2014 draft class remains without an NHL home to this point.

LW Dexter Dancs - 77th overall in HFNHL, UNDRAFTED in NHL
A little surprised given Dancs' makeup, but he'll have plenty of opportunity to impress as a freshman this season.

D Matt Bartovski - 92nd overall in HFNHL, 123rd to Anaheim in the NHL. -31
Adds to a solid draft for the Duck. He's a long-term project anyway, but they've done well bringing young players along. Don't expect to see him for 5-6 years.

RW JJ Piccinich - 98th overall in HFNHL, 103rd overall to Toronto in the NHL. -5
Similar boat to Bartovski - a decent situation long-term, but he's a log way off.

G Logan Halladay - 114th overall in HFNHL, UNDRAFTED in NHL.
Considering all the puck stoppers that got taken in the draft from the second round on, it comes as a huge surprise to me that Halladay didn't attract some interest. Not saying he was a gimme pick - far from it - but with so many teams taking gambles on project goaltenders, I would have thought he'd be higher on some teams' lists than the bums they ended up selecting.

With all these players headed to college this year or next, this is very much a wait-and-see draft for Columbus. But we have faith in the process...

# 17 - Sonny Milano - 16th to Columbus +1
# 31 - Markus Pettersson - 38th to Anaheim -7
# 46 - Dysin Mayo - 133rd to Arizona -87
# 58 - Ondrej Kase - 205th to Anaheim -147
# 138 - Kelly Summers - 189th to Ottawa -51
# 151 - Elvis Merzlikins - 76th to Columbus +75
# 168 - Beau Starrett - 88th to Chicago +80
# 186 - Dominic Franco - Undrafted
# 188 - Evan Smith - Undrafted
# 189 - JD Dudek - 152nd to New Jersey +37

Bonus: #149 2013 - Devon Toews - 108th to NY Islanders +41

Failed quite badly with my 2nd rounders but my late picks were extremely promising. Even had Devon Toews, who I drafted last year, find himself as a 4th round pick. Did not really expect my 7th rounders to be selected so it was nice to see Dudek drafted.

Overall, a solid draft.

Nelson Nogier 150 101 Winnipeg 49

Up and down draft overall. Really surprised that Watson went from potential 1st rounder at the beginning of the year to the 2nd last pick in the draft. Had a few players with big jumps up in position, Honka, Hawryluk, Peters, Tryamkin and Nogier. Overall I'm pretty happy with the results only having 1 out of 13 go undrafted.

Kasperi Kapanen 10th overall drafted 22nd Pittsburgh Penguins.
Jack Ramsey 173 Drafted 208th to Chicago
Jared Feigl 180 drafted 193 to Arizona
Josh Wesley 178th drafted 96th to Carolina

Kapanen falling makes me wonder of trading up made sense. He was anywhere from Top 10-20 on most lists him falling is frustrating however looking at the Pens success lately they might turn him into a stud like fellow fin Ollie Maata

28th overall, Jakub Vrana - 13th overall to Washington : +15
Comment: Always good to have a first rounder rise but Washington seems to collect skilled forwards like it's an end to itself, so who knows where Vrana fits.

34th overall, Jack Dougherty - 51st overall to Nashville : -17
Comment: Figured he would go late first to mid second, so this wasn't too surprising, although Collins going first was odd. Doesn't get any better than Wisconsin and Nashville if you want a dman to develop.

35th overall, John Quenneville - 30th overall to New Jersey : +5
Comment: I wondered if he could slip so this was a mild surprise. Lou or Conte compared him to Henrique which is encouraging.

37th overall, Brendan Lemieux - 31st overall to Buffalo : +6
Comment: According to Bob Mckenzie, there was quite a bit of interest in this pick for Lemieux, and the player himself was disappointed he was still on the board. Only concern is Buffalo has such depth.

70th overall, Jake Walman - 82nd overall to St. Louis : -12
Comment: Knew there was a wide range of possible outcomes, with some questions. Joins fellow Canucks prospect Tommy Vannelli as a high upside dman in the St. Louis system.

94th overall, Ben Thomas - 119th overall to Tampa Bay : -27
Comment: Big surprise for me. Expected him to go late second to mid third. Not sure what happened but a good system to go to at least. May be a Ryan Button or Stephen Silas type who lacks the tools to stand out.

111th overall, Miles Gendron - 70th overall to Ottawa : +41
Comment: Obviously pleased. Expected him to slip into the third round, but the destination is a pleasant surprise.

119th overall, Jacob Middleton - 210 to Los Angeles : -91
Comment: Huge taller who ended up the last pick. Knew he could slip but very surprised he almost went undrafted, particularly with Lintinuemi going in the second round. But the next guy on my list did go undrafted so could be worse.

Overall : Lots of red, but only Middleton feels like a miss. The other three guys who slipped ended up with Nashville, St. Louis and Tampa, which isn't bad. Having all three forwards rise is enough of a victory for me.

Colorado traded out of the early rounds in the draft, by moving two early 3rd round picks for 2nd round picks in future drafts. In the end the Avalanche made two picks in the 2014 draft and one previously drafted player was drafted in the 2014 NHL draft.

207th - Felix Girard - Drafted 95th overall in 2013 by Nashville. +108
209th - Connor Clifton - Drafted 133rd overall in 2013 by Phoenix +76

164th in 2011 - Viktor Arvidsson - Drafted 112th overall this year by Nashville +52

So far this looks like another successful draft for the Avalanche.

1.22 - Nikita Scherbak - 26th to Montreal - 4
- Because of the Russian factor, we thought he'd fall out of the first, so it was a nice surprise to see him get picked up late in the first by Montreal. Great fit for him, seems to have the right kind of personality for Montreal and should fit in well with Markov, Emelin and Galchenyuk.

2.51 - Christian Dvorak - 58th to Arizona -7
- A bit of a reach for us, could've gone anywhere from 2nd to 5th, glad he was picked up at the end of the 2nd. Not crazy about him going to Arizona, but plays a style that is adaptable to how the Coyotes play.

3.82 - Andreas Englund - 40th to Ottawa +42
- Figured he'd go somewhere in the 2nd and was quite pleased he was taken by Ottawa. Apparently the Sens had him comfortably in the first and were trying to acquire a late first on day one to select him. Hopefully he develops some chemistry with Karlsson someday :naughty:

4.111 - Noah Rod - 53rd to San Jose +58
- Really had no idea where he was going to be picked, so it was a pleasant surprise to see him picked up late in the 2nd. San Jose seems to be going through a bit of a rebuild so he might get an opportunity sooner rather than later.

4.112 - Dominic Turgeon - 63rd to Detroit +48

- Another guy that could've gone anywhere from 2nd to 5th rnd. Glad he was picked by Detroit as he will likely develop properly with them. However, since he was picked by Detroit, he's probably 6-8 yrs away from cracking their lineup.

4.114 - Oskar Lindblom - 138th to Philadelphia -24
- Thought he would've gone in the 2nd or 3rd, so somewhat surprised to see him fall to the 5th. Very indifferent about Philly taking him, not a team known for developing Swedish player, so might not be the ideal team to develop a raw prospect like Lindblom.

5.122 - Brandon Hickey - 64th to Calgary +58
- Figured he'd go in the 3rd, so not surprised at where he was drafted. Alberta kid picked by the Flames, probably liked his character.

6.172 - Daniel Walcott - 140th to New York Rangers +32
- Had no idea where he was going to go, or if he was even going to get drafted. Glad he landed somewhere and to a team that doesn't have a lot of depth on the backend.

7.184 - Joonas Lyytinen - 132nd to Nashville +52
- Didn't expect him to get drafted, so it was another pleasant surprise to see him land somewhere. It's also nice to see him drafted by a team that's known to have success at developing dmen.

For the Blues

#29 Anthony DeAngelo – (#19) +10
A nice bump for the mercurial d-man, but not a big deal either way given he had a potential huge variance on where he would be taken. Nice to see the amount of due diligence Stevie Y and team did on Anthony before taking him, but not a shock given their love for skill in any shape or form of late.

#99 Miles Wood (#100 in 2013) -1
Over the moon he fell to me in this spot, as he was relatively unknown last year before being taken by the Devils, but emerged as one of the top college recruits in the nation this year. Still a relative unproven commodity however, given the quality of competition thus far, but upside is quite high, which is rare in the 4th round and beyond.

#119 William Lagesson (#91) +28

A work horse for Sweden at the U18’s and named one of their top 3 players, as already shown he will be coming to North America next year, either in the USHL (already drafted) or CHL. Plays a NA game.

#139 Chris Clapperton (#122 in 2013) +17
Another overager already NHL drafted, Clapperton is not unlike the Blues selection of Cedric Paquette last season. Skills and tenacity in an undersized frame, projects as a potential sold bottom 6 character forward.

Also

#97 Lucas Wallmark (#113-2013)

A Blues favorite last year, the Blues were able to trade for the undrafted Swedish center last season, and were pleased to see him taken in the top 100 this year. While an overager, as a September ’95, he is very close in age to many of those drafted this year, and all the more impressive when you consider his success in the SHL thus far.

Quiet Entry Draft for the HFNHL Rangers with only 3 picks:

Nick Schmaltz +4
HFNHL: 24th overall
NHL: 20th overall (Chicago Blackhawks)
Chicago Blackhawks traded up to 20th to select the talented forward.

F Warren Foegele -13
HFNHL: 54th overall
NHL: 67th overall (Carolina Hurricanes)
Without a 3rd rounder, went ahead and picked him at 54th, knowing that he'd likely go lower in the NHL draft. Pleased with only a difference of 13 picks.

F Ryan Rehill +31
HFNHL: 158th overall
NHL: 127th overall (New Jersey Devils)
Drafted in the 6th round in HFNHL, New Jersey picked up the big defenseman in the top half of the 5th round.

HFNHL Bruins 2014 Draft Report

Beantown (AP):

Boston drafted some fine talent in this years draft, utilizing a BPA strategy out of the gates and drafting another excellent young Dman in Haydn Fleury with their first round pick. He'll be joining a team already laden with fine young talent on the blue-line. Eric Cornel was selected in the second round - a Peterborough Pete's play-maker that GM Kruegs had seen play a few times this past year. With their 3rd selection the Bruins went to a familiar theme usually reserved for late round picks - the draft-a-giant strategy - and Dman Ryan Collins certainly fits that bill towering at 6'5 with a long reach and a shutdown style. For their 4th pick, the Bruins turned to the NHL Leafs selecting their 2013 drafted Andreas Johnson who was passed over last year in the HFNHL draft. The rest can be seen below. Overall - the Bruins had an aggregate delta of -185 compared to the NHL indicating that the NHL selected the same players much earlier in the draft than the HFNHL Bruins. This bodes well for the HFNHL Bruins. The only player not selected in this years draft was crafty Russian Arkhip Nekolenko who's stock plummeted in the later half of the draft year - mostly due to concerns regarding injuries and the KHL factor - however he may get some looks in the coming years from NHL clubs.
