Marchand : 795 pts in 874 games
Marner: 455 pts in 427

Marchand is playing the best hockey of his life and it is still below Marner TODAY.
You are correct. Marner is no Marchand. He is better

Marchand came on later in his career. Over the last 5 years Marchand has 27 more points in 10 fewer games, 1.21 PPG vs 1.13.

His Corsi for has been 69.5, 70.2, 68.9, 67.9 and 74.3 over 60 minutes to Marner's 72.3, 73.1, 64.6, 58, and 71.

To me, both of those stats show a slight but clear advantage to Marchand on offence. The defensive numbers show a more clear separation.

Marner is really good, but Marchand is continuously underrated.

LOL.

If you're going by that. Marchand's last 420 games, 506 points, +125 and 14 short handed goals. He out produced him playing like 1-2 minutes less a game, and playing more time killing penalties. Even if Marner is considered a better offensive player, it's by a hair. Marchand is a SIGNIFICANTLY better two way player.

I know Leaf fans get a little bent out of shape and sensitive when you say a player is better than one of their guys, but it’s true, and it’s ok. It’s not a knock on Marner that I consider Marchand (who’s arguably been the best winger over the past half decade) better.

Are we voting for who's better right now? Like who we'd pick if my team was playing a SCF game 7 tomorrow?
Or is it more of a who I'd take on my team now and going forward?

Would be cool to specify.
Cool thread :thumbu:

He's had 1 year in his entire career with an actual 1st line center. And he lit it up.

Dude carried Monahan like no other player I can ever remember being carried. Look what Monahan did this year without Gaudreau.

I get that Monahan never was a superstar but he was a pretty good player before his injuries, it's not like his production dropped because of not playing with Johnny hockey, his body is gimped right now.

I think there is an expected Corsi different when you line up most of your career with Tavares, Matthews, Rielly, Holl, Bozak, Bunting and Kapanen vs Pastrnak, Chara, McAvoy and Bergeron.

Also slightly disengenious to compare a data set with Marchand's prime vs Marner's 19 year old season. What happened 5 years ago is basically meaningless, or weighted very, very lightly. A straight average makes no sense.

He was healthy for the first 70% of the season this year, and was skating better than he had in years. The #1 reason his production fell off a cliff was because he wasn't being carried by Gaudreau. The same thing happens to every player who plays with 13.

He literally never produced above a 3rd line rate without Gaudreau on the ice at 5v5.

Sure and injuries, dropping 4 MPG TOI and playing with less skilled players all comes into it as well.

Look we get that you LOVE Johnny and he isn't a bad pick at 3,4 or heck even 5 or 6 that's how good the competition is here.

Not specifying is part of the fun. Up to the voter to decide.

We usually get enough votes that it evens out.

That doesn't really explain why his p/60 dropped off so much.

Even before this year, his career 5v5 p/60 without Gaudreau was like 1.38 over 2000+ minute sample. That's pretty brutal.
