I am like 90% sure that room is optional (and only exists to teach you that the Wall jump exists.$)

I could be totally wrong though. Been a bit since my last play through.

It's optional but from what I recall it temps you with an energy upgrade on the other side of the room and if you try to walk across or miss the jump you fall through the floor. If you fall down and at the bottom go left before right there's a save station you can use before realizing you're 'trapped'.

No problem today when you can just jump on the internet, but back in the day I think it caused me to restart on my first game.

The game does subtly tempt you to try and sequence break and gives you the tools if you can figure out the wall jump and bomb jump.
