I guess it's because he came out of nowhere and had a huge effect on the team but, yeah, I'm not a fan of the reference either. The character itself and the "HaMMy" on the front is plenty enough.

Not a bad overall design, just too busy for my taste.

If it looks too "McDonalds" the NHL might step in and tell him to change it. I'm pretty sure that advertising is not allowed on players equipment unless authorized by the NHL. The double golden MM may stand out a bit too much in the word (I think) "Hammy"

The mask looks very much inspired by a DaveArt mask imo with all of the mini logos and lens flare spots.

Love the little shout out to Jonathan Pitre - classy touch. You can't help but cheer for Hammond - his story is such a great one in sports, and he seems like a really grounded, genuine guy.

On the back panel of the mask there is a small butterfly with Jonathan Pitre's initials. (The kids with the rare genetic condition he has are often called butterfly children.)
