There are a lot of best and worst claims on this forum that are continually repeated--gather adherents and momentum and then taken for an absolute truth. For instance:

Tanner Glass is the worst player in the league.

Dominic Moore is the best 4th liner in the world.

Keith Yandle is our best defenseman.

Tanner Glass is not a very good player but he's not the worst player in the league. Dominic Moore is a very good 4th liner. The idea of who is the best 4th liner in the world seems absurd on the one hand and debatable on the other. I'd leave it as he's very good in his role--though I think there's been a bit of decline in his overall game this year. Keith Yandle is our best offensive defenseman. He is not our best overall defenseman.

All three statements are rooted in some basis of fact. Tanned Glass has been legitimately one of the three worst everyday nhlers over his career. Dom Moore is one of the best 4th liners in the league, especially with his usage. And luckily For Yandle, a defenseman's value is comprised of offense and defense, so it's pretty fair to say he's been the best defenseman taking everything into account.

Dan Boyle - B- good on PP. Still has some ability.
Derick Brassard - B+ - usually a good player for us.
Jesper Fast - C+ - plays hard, has ability, not used properly
Dan Girardi - D- - too many bad clears, bad reads, etc. ... you know the story. Not used properly.
Tanner Glass - F+ - "He's playing better, Sam." Still not an NHL-er.
Kevin Hayes - C - some good moments. Not always used properly.
Kevin Klein - B - usually a good player for us. Better puck-mover than our two highest-paid D.
Chris Kreider - C - some good moments. He might benefit from a change in lines.
Oscar Lindberg - B - Second-best young forward this year.
Henrik Lundqvist - B - good enough for a good team to win with, not always a magician.
Ryan McDonagh (C) - B - usually does a good job. Would benefit from a change in partner.
Dylan McIlrath - incomplete - impressive when he did play.
Jayson Megna - incomplete
J.T. Miller - A- - Our best young forward.
Dominic Moore - B - Good fourth-liner, useful for occasional fill-ins on other lines. Gets to play with TG.
Rick Nash - B - Good, well-rounded game. Not sure whether it's $7.8 million worth, however.
Antti Raanta - B- - Fine back-up
Marc Staal - C - had some bad games, other times does his job. I'm not as down on Staal as others are.
Viktor Stalberg - C- - Now he's stuck with Mr. Incredible.
Derek Stepan - B- - has had a few good games, could do better. Was injured and also suffered from coach's line mismatches - Fast should not be on his line.
Keith Yandle - A- - Makes the offense go. Needs to play more.
Mats Zuccarello - A- - Had an incredible stretch, now appears to have cooled off. Probably our best forward.

Jeff Gorton - C - Hard to say. We'll see what he's got soon enough. Don't know why Glass is here.
Alain Vigneault - D - The coach has lost me with his decisions & statements. The most worrisome part of the year so far.
Scott Arniel - B - the power play seems better.
Ulf Samuelsson - C - team D and D pairs seem messed up. Is this on Ulf? I'd like to grade Ulf higher.
Benoit Allaire - A - our goaltending is always good enough, and sometimes spectacular.

Sam Rosen - C - Sam is OK.
Joe Micheletti - F - Joe is not OK. Too much suave propaganda. Goes out of his way to protect Girardi & Glass & blame other players for their screw-ups. Non-stop BS machine. Yuck.
John Giannone - B - I like Giannone. I like his play-by-play - he says who's doing what.
Al Trautwig - never watch Al, sorry.

The statements you make aren't facts--they're opinions. There really is no way you can quantify them. As for Yandle the best part of his game by far is his offensive game. I'm not sure how you could even compare his all around game to McDonagh who is far better defensively and a constant on the penalty kill. By the way it's not just AV not playing him on the PK--Dave Tippett did not give him PK minutes in Arizona either. He's a specialist who can take regular minutes but not a player you really want on the ice in a truly defensive situation--meaning he's not nearly a rounded player.

Dan Boyle- B Better than last year, does his job. Not a defensive stalwart but good on the PP. Moves the puck well. Legs not always there but the guys 40.

Derick Brassard - B+ Points for consistency. Nothing negative about his game. Just wish he could carry the team offensively in some games, but that's not who he is. Does his job.

Jesper Fast- C+ Well Jesper isn't grinding like he was last year, I question if it's the security of a 2 year deal. Would like to see him go back to being the hardest worker every shift.

Dan Girardi- C- Some absolute dog **** outings. Really questioning his decision making. Not one to bash him for is coris rating, but definitely for his losses in coverage and turnovers. Looks shell shocked out there.

Tanner Glass- B- You know he's a bad hockey player, but he hasn't hurt the team this year. Hasn't helped since his impact is minimal, but not as lost as last season. Effort is always there.

Kevin Hayes- D Doggin it. Floating out there. Soft on the puck, soft on the back check. Maybe the benching got through to him, needs to use his body, and play a thinking man's game.

Kevin Klein- B+ Probably the teams most reliable defenseman. Does his job.

Chris Kreider- D- Floater. Lacks effort. Not strong on the backcheck, shows up every 4 games. Lots of "get it over with" shifts. No motor, low character.

Oscar Lindberg- A- Cooled off a bit but was the team's saving grace outside of the goaltending early on.

Henrik Lundqvist- B Cooled off considerably but was the team's saving grace outside of Lindberg early on.

Ryan McDonagh (C)- C+ for the C. Flashes of his old self but not dominating games physically. Don't see that world class skating ability nearly enough. I also have strong reservations about him being captain material. That lockerroom doesn't seem like it's policing itself and holding each other accountable.

Dylan McIlrath- A- Baby Mac proving a lot of people wrong. Does his job, much better than anyone anticipated. Needs more ice time.

Jayson Megna- INC but love his hustle and hunger. Smart player, skates well, gets pucks to the net.

J.T. Miller- B+ Shows up every game. Getting consistent. Team's best zone entry forward.

Dominic Moore- C Not the same player, definitely not a winger, but I don't see the old Dom hustle and wits, I just see and Old Dom.

Rick Nash- C+ Awful start, some moments. Have only seen one hot streak. Needs to play with consistency and attack the net.

Antti Raanta- Did his job, kept the team in many games. Cooled off a bit but the coverage in front of him has decayed.

Marc Staal- C- Marcy Marc, too many gaff, not sticking to his assignments like glue. Playing with more desperation recently but was really really soft early on.

Viktor Stalberg- C- Showed up in pre-season and the 1st 10 games. Then slowly disappeard. Showed up again... just trying to do enough to earn another NHL contract. Low character guy.

Derek Stepan- C+ Not producing offensively but one the teams most important forwards. Needs to win more faceoffs and be the go to defensive stalwart that he showed being under Torts.

Keith Yandle- A- Needs more PP time Arnie... he needs more PP time. Sublime puck mover, offensive catalyst.

Mats Zuccarello- A Team's MVP. Not the hottest month when the team soured, but damn he's carried them.

Jeff Gorton- D Buddy you banked on way too many what ifs. Way too many. Needs to address culture of winning in the locker room and not just talent and skating ability.

Alain Vigneault C- Get's a C-, some really questionable usage, and a lack of accountability. See signs of him being the boss, also see signs of him being passive.

Scott Arniel- D PP not bad, but the PK is awful dude.... what is with your personnel usage bud? Terrible zone entries on the PP, awful adjustments on the PK. Coaching on laurels? Wake up and get to work.

Ulf Samuelsson- C+ Early on had a top defensive team, but his match ups and ice time distribution on the D have gotten worse. Needs to play guys based on merit.

Benoit Allaire- A one of the best in the biz. Spend some extra time with Hank please. Take him away from his family for more practice if he's not stealing games.

Sam Rosen- A+ I had lunch with this guy over the summer. Class act. Absolute class act and a true Ranger fan.

Joe Micheletti- B Getting better at criticizing guys. Not the corporate shill you imagine. Definitely throws in subtle digs.

John Giannone-B+ Had several twitter exchanges over the years; quality dude.

Al Trautwig- C I like him better when he's calling Olympic cross country

I give Hayes a little more leeway since it's only his second year in the league same for Fast. Sophomore Slump.

Isn't the grade for this season?

I'm still every bit excited about Hayes longterm as I've ever been but this season he's been our worst player.

Except McDonagh hasn't done a good job of preventing goals this season and isn't as good on the powerplay :handclap::handclap::handclap:

McDonagh plays against the best forwards in the league, so it makes sense that he has a worse GA/60 than Yandle and he has statistically been good on the PP, so you are wrong about that. The good GA/60 argument is the same argument that people were using last season to say that Boyle is good defensively, when he was very bad defensively. If you are playing against every teams Tanner Glass, you are probably not going to be on the ice when your team gives up a goal.

Dan Boyle: B-, he's been a decent player in the D zone but stellar on the PP

Derick Brassard: B, Not great, but not even close to horrible. His chemistry with Zucc is one to marvel at

Jesper Fast: C, the ceiling is high for fast, but he just doesn't have the tools. Reminds me of a poor-mans-winger-version of Stepan... 3rd liner at best, he should not be seeing top 6 time unless its in a pinch

Dan Girardi: F, he's been an absolute atrocity. Can't move the puck, busted kneecap, the coach keeps putting him out there for "big minutes" when he clearly isn't capable. He's in serious decline; a warm body at this point. Difficult to watch, he can't skate, and is still overly reliant on shot blocking to defend. Terrible all around, and needs to consider hanging them up.

Tanner Glass: C, while he hasn't been a detriment this year, I'm still convinced any AHL fodder could do what he is doing for a little more than 1/3 of his cap hit. Timing has indeed been better and he's been somewhat capable in the offensive zone, but is still punished in the D zone on the regular.

Kevin Hayes: B-, has been very "lazy" and not composed, but he's going through a sophomore slump, so I am willing to give him a pass. His good games have reminded me of last year, and a lot of his struggles are due to the loss of linemates, plus a lack of regular linemates.

Kevin Klein: B+, Steady minute cruncher, still has the best slapper on this team. Has been reliable in the D zone especially before the injury, but has also been solid at moving the puck too

Chris Kreider: D, Completely overthinking the game out there. He's outsmarting himself to the point where he is actually useless. I want to chalk it up to a slump, so I am hopeful he can break out of it next season

Oscar Lindberg: B+, Pleasantly surprised by his play. I know it's dropped off as of late, but as a rookie under AV I was expecting a handful of goals and maybe 20 points, but he's proven capable of playing with any linemate including Nash. Refreshing to see

Henrik Lundqvist: First 20 games A+, last 20 games C+. We know Hank, and we know what he's capable of. I want to chalk his slump up to the team in front of him, but the stats are increasingly showing the opposite

Ryan McDonagh (C): B+, When he is paired with Klein instead of Girardi he has been a pleasure to watch. He has had a number of bad games, which is still concerning, and it's starting to seem like 13-14 was a fluke year. Still, he's capable of putting up 35-40 points

Dylan McIlrath: A, by far the most refreshing ranger to see this season. he's incredible alone the boards, slick with the puck, great at laying huge hits and clearing the crease. If only our coach could use him appropriately.

Jayson Megna: No rating

J.T. Miller: A, since game 20 Miller has also been one of the most refreshing Rangers to watch. He's playing with hustle and fire. He's solid on the puck, quick on skates, and his scoring touch is coming around

Dominic Moore: B-, Age is getting the best of him, and his linemates have been god awful, but he's probably been the most reliable forward all year. Quick on the skates, great PKer.

Rick Nash: B+, even with the lack of goal scoring, he's still been a force to be reckoned with. I do think this is one of his final years where he could even be considered a 40 goal scorer (he's most certainly not hitting it this year). He's been instrumental to our top lines, but I don't see him being a "need" after this season, not at his age, cap hit, and contract status.

Antti Raanta: B+, in the few games I've watched him play, he's been good. Not as good as flash-in-the-pan-Cam was last year, but still reliable.

Marc Staal: C-, unlike Girardi, Staal HAS exhibited the ability to play reliably if he has the right partner. Unfortunately, Boyle is not the right partner for him. Beyond that, individually he's been unable to drive play away from the D zone, and is overly reliant on stick checks and gap control, and is seemingly avoiding contact as of late (have not been able to see him separate the puck from the player recently)

Viktor Stalberg: D+, while he has some good games and some great straightaway speed, he's incredibly unreliable, and is proving to be a 4th liner at best in the NHL... Don't see him returning

Derek Stepan: C, Injuries have set him back, however I'm seeing no chemistry on any line he touches except for with Zucc. Kreider's slump may have more to do with this than Stepan, but it's worth nothing that Stepan needs legitimate top line players to be effect.

Keith Yandle: A+, Absolutely incredible. Magician with the puck. Has a horrendous shot, but his passing abilities are top notch. Yandle-McIlrath was by far the best pairing. His usage is pathetic thanks to AV.

Mats Zuccarello: A-, he has had some bad games here and there, but he's overall been our best forward. Some fantastic chemistry with Brassard and he's also found his scoring touch

Jeff Gorton: C+, considering the contracts that Sather left him with. I want to see a shakeup because there is no way this team can win with the type of play we see now, and it's going to be up to Gorton to get those players

Alain Vigneault: F, His usage and accountability has been completely logic-defying. He's completely out to lunch with some of his assessments. The usage of Glass is cringe worthy, but it's not nearly as bad as it's been with Girardi's usage. Sitting McIlrath for Girardi was pathetic as always, and the "putting down of players" is seemingly getting under the players skin in a very, very bad way.

Scott Arniel: C, Middle of the road at this point. The power play has improved because of Boyle, but that's really it.

Ulf Samuelsson: D-, Ulf has just as much to do with the D as AV does, and quite frankly the 6 different D pairings we are seeing every game drives me absolutely bonkers. Further misevaluation of talent makes you want to bang your head on the wall.

Benoit Allaire: A+, self explantory.

Sam Rosen: B-, He's had some great games when he can actually do the Play-by-Play, but Joe has been a disaster and is ruining Sam

Joe Micheletti: D-, Joe needs to learn when to stop talking when Sam is trying to do PBP... It feels like story time with Grandma when Joe goes on and on about a moot topic/point to the point where you are missing game action

John Giannone: B, between the benches is a gimmick, but I'm enjoying him more than Sam mostly because he can tune Joe out.

Al Trautwig: ---- I mean, it's Al... whatever. lol

Dan Boyle (C-) - Very poor at ES but has looked great on the PP.

Derick Brassard (B+) - Poor possession effects but still a strong scorer in all situations.

Jesper Fast (C) - Being forced into a role he shouldn't be. 4th line winger.

Dan Girardi (F-) - Not really an NHL'er anymore.

Tanner Glass (D) - He sucks but he's been "OK' by 4th liner standards.

Kevin Hayes (D) - Good first two months, straight dog **** December onwards.

Kevin Klein (A) - Love him on the top pair. One of the only bright spots this year.

Chris Kreider (D-) - Failed pretty much everyone's expectations of him and I am adamant about re-signing him at this point.

Oscar Lindberg (B) - Rode a very nice shooting% but I like him as a player.

Henrik Lundqvist (B) - Godlike first quarter followed by a laughable second quarter.

Ryan McDonagh (C) (B+) - Better than last year considerably. Needs to get the **** away from Girardi.

Dylan McIlrath (A+) - An absolute joke that he isn't playing every game. Done everything asked of him and more.

Jayson Megna (inc)

J.T. Miller (A) - After an up and down start he has, comfortably, been the best player on the team from December forward.

Dominic Moore (B+) - Still a very good 4C.

Rick Nash (B) - Not shooting as much as he should. Hurting his goal totals.

Antti Raanta (B) - Okay.

Marc Staal (D) - Not as bad as the other wonder twin, but he sucks and is taking minutes away from a considerably better defenseman.

Viktor Stalberg (C) - Really dumb hockey player but he's performed very well on the 4th line.

Derek Stepan (D) - Absolutely needs to generate more offense.

Keith Yandle (A-) - Doing everything he can in his pathetic usage. **** off AV.

Mats Zuccarello - (A-) - Same story as Brassard.

Jeff Gorton (C-) - I'm not ready to character assassinate Gorton but he seems to be catering to AV in ways that are unhealthy.

Alain Vigneault (F) - Personnel management has been embarrassing in ways that can't be described.

Scott Arniel (B+) - PP looks very good even when not scoring. Yandle not on the 1st pair is totally baffling.

Ulf Samuelsson (C-) - PK has been garbage.

Benoit Allaire (B+) - self explanatory.

Sam Rosen (B-) - Getting harder to listen to every year but dammit I love Sam

Joe Micheletti (D-) - Just atrocious.

John Giannone (B) - Awkward but he does his job

Al Trautwig (B) - same as Giannone.

Ras, how is Brass a B- and Zuuc an A-?

Brass:

- 2nd on team in points
- Tied for team lead in GWG
- Nearly 17% shooting %
- 3rd on team in PP goals
- Has taken 7 penalties all year (That's one every 6 games. Not bad for a feisty **** talker).
- 4th on team in +/-
- On pace to tie or beat career high in points
- On pace for 29 Goals, which utterly destroys his career high of 19
- 3rd best CF% on team for all Forwards (tied with Zuuc @ 48.65)

By most standards, that should be an A or at least B+....yes?

I meant for Boyle to get a C- and Brass a B+. Mixed them up.

I'll try to rate them based on my expectations for them. However, in some cases, that is kind of hard to do, because of high/poor level of play. A 'C' tells you the player kinda fares as expected

Dan Boyle C At this point, hard to believe he was a our best defender in the PO last season. Make up for it with offense.
Derick Brassard B+ As a guy who was never high on Brassard, he's keeping up last year's level of play while playing solidly on the defensive end.
Jesper Fast C People who thought Fast would be able to play Top-6 minutes were kidding themselves. To me, he's the player who does exactly as I expected. Good on the PK, very solid defensively, on pace for a 30-ish point season.
Dan Girardi D- I've been a long time fan of him, but he appears to be playing his way into retirement. There's only so much abuse a human being can take.
Tanner Glass D He's doing better than expected but he still isn't NHL material.
Kevin Hayes D To me this guy had sophomore slump written all over him. At the same time the level of displayed laziness is nauseating, and I consider myself a very lazy person.
Kevin Klein B+ Better than expected. Similarities to last seasons start. Let's hope he can keep it up.
Chris Kreider D 6 goals in 40 games with his shot and speed. Are you kidding me?
Oscar Lindberg A- He's the rookie, he's even on face-offs, he's smart defensively and he's on pace for about 20 goals. If he only reaches 15 it still will have been a very good season for him.
Henrik Lundqvist C That one was tough, I've never rated Hank this low. Early season awesomeness followed by mediocrity. He can and will be better though. Not worried about him.
Ryan McDonagh (C) C About as expected. I had a slim hope he could get back to 13/14 season form, but I think outside of a few spurts, that ship has sailed.
Dylan McIlrath A What's to say, really? Labeled a bust by many prior to this season, he does extraordinarily well. When he plays.
Jayson Megna NR due to sample size.
J.T. Miller B Has been one of our best players, but the numbers don't show that yet. At some point, as he continues to mature, I think he can be a guy who gives his teammates a kick in the ass when it's needed. Keep him and stick a letter to him somewhere down the road. Huge fan.
Dominic Moore C He's a bit slower than last year. As always, very smart player. Unfortunately, I think this will be his last year in NY. Thanks Dom, always appreciated you.
Rick Nash C I didn't expect Nash to put up as many goals as last year, obviously. I still think he can get to thirty. I'd really like him to play a crash the net kind of game here and there, I think this would really be a nice asset to his high level of skill. However, he's just not that kind of player. Time for me to get that through my head.
Antti Raanta NR due to sample size.
Marc Staal D- Yeah, I really had hopes he could play on a Top-4 level regularly. Welp.
Viktor Stalberg B- Fast, big and a bit stupid with his on-ice-decisions. However, he's better than expected.
Derek Stepan D- Is Kreider bad because Stepan struggles or is Stepan bad because Kreider struggles? Anyway, they both are nowhere near I hoped they'd be. Stepan is on pace for a not-so-stunning 35-40 point season. Pick it up dude, or you'll feel the heat next year.
Keith Yandle B One of our better defenders. PP could be a bit more tailored to his style.
Mats Zuccarello A Best player this season. Hustles every time, has an insane amount of creativity and is one of the few players who look like they care every game.

Jeff Gorton C I didn't really know what to put here to be honest. He always appeared to be a quiet worker who's more comfortable with less exposure. I kinda wish he'd give AV the talk about some decisions.
Alain Vigneault C- He's his usual stubborn self, with some especially mind boggling decisions this season.
Scott Arniel B PP is doing substantially better than I'd have expected.
Ulf Samuelsson D Time to make some adjustments on D. I hope he speaks up on the whole McIlrath situation and on altering the coverage system. Actual results shows no prove of any such thing.
Benoit Allaire NR Is supposedly one of the best in the business, but I don't have enough knowledge to rate him.

Dan Boyle C Tried hard and better than expected
Derick Brassard B He's been good, but unlikely to win a cup with him as our go to center
Jesper Fast C Ok with a few great deflections, but bottom 6 all the way
Dan Girardi C I think the criticism is over-done, but he's been very disappointing and has amassed a number of blunders
Tanner Glass E He doesn't belong at this level, but there have been signs of improvement
Kevin Hayes E Lazy and stupid. Much better since being scratched
Kevin Klein A Consistently good and one of our few players who generally appears to be smart out there
Chris Kreider D I've been shocked by how poor he's been. He will get better in the second half.
Oscar Lindberg B Started very hot indeed and has earned his spot for sure, but pretty average for a good while now
Henrik Lundqvist B Was never going to be able to keep up his early play, but has stolen so many points for us this year in spite of those around him that he's still deserving of a good rating
Ryan McDonagh (C) B We need McDonagh to be an A, but is nearer a C. Has got a lot better after some very poor games
Dylan McIlrath B Very solid, but his popularity is as much based on hatred for other D as it is on his own play. I like what I see
Jayson Megna B Extremely limited game time
J.T. Miller B Someone I've not been keen on in the past who has upped his game and is playing with the right attitude.
Dominic Moore C Fine, but a bit of a drop-off. Difficult playing with Glass.
Rick Nash C Is clearly trying, but not anything like the star we need him to be, Good defensively...
Antti Raanta B Steady. Not his fault when the skaters no show
Marc Staal D We all know he knows what he should be doing, but he's slow (especially at turning round) and struggling a lot
Viktor Stalberg D He's really frustrating. At the very start and in the last few games he's been pretty good, but the time in between was rubbish.
Derek Stepan C Not up to standard. Without a super-star center we need 2 good ones. We haven't had it.
Keith Yandle B Pretty good all year and seemed to help McIlrath. His good passes encourage turning a blind eye to a few too many stupid turn-overs...
Mats Zuccarello A He has been our best forward, plays the right way all the time, but not the ideal player to be a cup contenders very best offensive player

Jeff Gorton C Not much to say. Got rid of Etem, but the Stoll move seemed stupid
Alain Vigneault D Glass out with a minute left to protect a lead isn't even funny
Scott Arniel B No choice but to rate him highly based on the PP. History would suggest he isn't responsible for the success, but there's no other way to judge this season.
Ulf Samuelsson D Too many confusing D-pairings who look confused that they are D parings
Benoit Allaire B His goalies got Bs

Sam Rosen C Getting ever more confused by who is who.
Joe Micheletti D Knows more than Rosen, but has obsessions with certain players, talks some real nonsense and also states the obvious all the time. His constant questions like "That was a pass, wasn't it?" or "A big man, isn't he?" makes Sam look worse because he decides to answer the questions with confirmation.
John Giannone B Best off between the benches
Al Trautwig C Too many weird interview questions
