The notoriously loaded class of 2003 also deserves a mention

Suter @ 7
Phaneuf @ 9
Seabrook @ 14
Weber @ 49
Byfuglien @ 245

And Burns was taken @ 20 albeit as a RW

Not the best by any means, but the only good thing about 1996 is a reasonably good collection of defensemen. Chara's there, Phillips went first, Kaberle, Kubina, Mitchell, Salo, Morris, Lyman, a few more regulars.
They didn't get to them in anything like the right order, but it's something for an otherwise terrible draft.

Is there any kind of accounting when it comes to ranking 1979...? Or are we playing the ball as it lies...?

go with your heart

but i guess one question is, even with 1979 being a triple draft, and with so many notable dmen going in the first round, is it better than 2008?

like, there is no bourque in 2008 of course. but would the next four best guys all be from the 2008 draft? doughty and karlsson are hall of famers of the non-lowe variety, pietrangelo captained a cup winner and is a three time postseason all-star, and josi was a hair from two norrises. although after that it’s just carlson for 2008, whereas the 1979 draft has both longtime stalwarts like mccrimmon, ramsey, and lowe, and comets like reinhart and hartsburg, and ramage who was a little bit of column a, a little bit of column b.
