Softy of the night is this Joe Veleno goal on Cayden Primeau

One of several Primeau stinkers on the night. If the rebound wasn’t bad enough, he just stands there like a statue on the next shot that he had plenty of time to recover by.

SJ gave up 3 stoppable? Well we both know who wasn’t playing. Why go with the obviously inferior choice for the final game?

He was out hurt the last week of the season.

Big shocker.

Cooley is one of the worst goalies I saw this year. 27 year old career minor leaguer that never played in the NHL before the Sharks just got him at the deadline.

He's a local kid from their area. Nice story but that should about do it for him in the league.

Blackwood was banged up? Wow. That’s surprising. Guy is usually so dependable and unflappable. He rolls out a mean case/control study on virology too.

Softy of the night is this John Beecher goal on Ilya Samsonov

I didn’t even nail him with a stoppable goal on this at first view, but it looks bad when you get a look on replay.

I think the guy somewhat fans on the shot or just didn’t get a whole lot on it. It’s very rare I nail a goalie on this kind of a goal, as it’s usually an empty net and almost completely no chance for most goalies. This one could have easily hit Samsonov.

I'm not coughing up Mercer for that sieve.
I would for now, I'm not sure I would for 7-8 years though.

And we still haven't even fired the goalie coach, so I'm not sure I want anyone of value in here.

He's not all that good this season for a great young goalie.
I don’t think he’s ever been particularly better than just good or solid. Outside of a 7 game playoff series where his team didn’t even win.

Since moneypuck gives expected save percentages and it's less typing than all of the GSAx numbers, his expected save percentage this year was .904%, actual save percentage .905%.

22-23: Expected save percentage of .915%, actual save percentage .919%.

21-22: expected save percentage of .913%, Actual save percentage of .914%.

20-21: Expected save percentage of .915%. Actual save percentage: of .911%.

His playoffs in 2022 superhuman, but his playoffs last year in close to three times as many games played were HORRIBLE.

For evolving hockey he was at +1.46 GSAx this year, which is right around where he was on moneypuck's model.

22-23 evolving hockey really likes him that year. +21.65 GSAx. Way better than he was on moneypuck's model for that year.

21-22: +0.51 GSAx, which is nearly what he was on moneypuck's model that year.

20-21: -2.14 GSAx, which is about similar enough to what he was on moneypuck's model that year.

In conclusion, I don't think Oettinger was EVER a particularly good goalie. He's probably an above average goalie, but not a really good and defiinitely not a great one. He's still only 25 and he's shown to be able to play a lot of games and be a real workhorse when healthy. But Scott Wedgewood has similar numbers to him the last few years, albeit in a much smaller number of games played. The cremains of Braden Holtby (which have been MIA ever since) had similar number to him that year they played together, despite very poor numbers for Holtby the several years before this on the Capitals and Canucks.

Goalies have been posting better numbers under Bowness since he became a head coach again and the same can be said about DeBoer.

And one other thing to also consider. Goalies have been overachieving in Dallas for a while. Bishop did when he was missing body parts, His actual save percentage wasn't much higher than his expected save percentage the year they were crying about him being snubbed for the Vezina. Khudobin, who was a mediocre goalie also had that run to the finals there when he was 34 years old and posted far better numbers there than anywhere else, until he had bad hips after that year. They also have a really good goalie coach, for what it's worth. Must be nice.

I think I gave a pretty good seminar on why Oettinger is overrated.

So he's more or less what's expected in the regular season and has been living off one playoff series. He can still improve but I agree he gets overrated.

If he was dropped on a team like Buffalo? Where the expected save percentages are considerably below league average? I could see him putting up similar numbers to what Levi did this past year. Probably even worse.

Levi had really good numbers on both moneypuck and evolving hockey, despite an .899% save percentage. His expected save percentage was .892% on moneypuck, while Luukkonen's for whatever reason was .907%.
