SUTER STRIKES OIL

Ryan-Suter.jpg

EDMONTON JOURNAL - The Edmonton Oilers have landed their big fish. After years of futility chasing superstars like Dany Heatley and Marian Hossa, only to be spurned in their advances, GM Soli has conquered the UFA Moby Dick and landed top echelon superstar defenseman Ryan Suter

Ryan Suter signed a 13-year pact with the Edmonton Oilers with an average annual cap hit of $9,500,000. This contract will make him the highest paid defenseman in the NHL

Salary breakdown is as follows:

Year 1: $13,400,000
Year 2: $13,400,000
Year 3: $13,400,000
Year 4: $13,400,000
Year 5: $13,400,000
Year 6: $13,400,000
Year 7: $13,400,000
Year 8: $13,400,000
Year 9: $7,800,000
Year 10: $3,900,000
Year 11: $2,500,000
Year 12: $1,250,000
Year 13: $1,000,000

In a short press release, GM Soli had this to say about his prize Free Agent acquisition:

"I don't have to say how pleased we are to have Suter here in our organization, the smiles across everyones faces here says it all. It was an enormous contract to doll out, we realize that. However, we believe overpaying your elite players is an easier pill to swallow than it is to overpay your bit players. As important, we had to change the stigma around Edmonton and make this a franchise that players want to flock to. We believe we've made this team a contender and with a couple more moves, we'll have constructed a cup favorite."

"Who's he going to play with? It doesn't matter who he plays with, he's Ryan freaking Suter!"

After narrowly missing out on Ryan Suter, the Detroit Red Wings have added the next two top defensemen in the market in Dennis Wideman and Joe Corvo. For the less money per season we get two top notch defensemen on 6 year deals. Wideman has a full NTC and will be paid 5.25M a season while Corvo makes 4M a season with a LNTC where he can void a trade to 6 teams.

It's a 5 year 30 million dollar deal.

"We felt it was necessary to get a top-line RW for Ovechkin and Backstrom. Ruutu will complement those two players very well and we look forward to the next 5 years with Ruutu."

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced two free agent signings today, adding offensive winger Kristian Huselius to a 2 year, 6M$ contract while also adding depth defenceman Chris Campoli to a 1 year, 1.5M$ deal.

"Both these players will improve our club immensely. Kristian is a legitimate scoring winger, who we feel will slot in very well on our second line and with lots of PP time. Chris Campoli is a solid NHL defenceman, and will see time on our third pairing and spot duty on the power play as well. We're very happy with the additionof both of these players, but are not done addressing other needs on our roster."

The Montreal Canadiens are very proud to announce the signing of defenseman Tim Gleason to a six years contract worth 5M$ per season. The deal also includes a no-trade clause.

There’s no doubt that Gleason was one of the best defenseman available in the offseason. He will bring a lot of stability to our young defense and he will be a core player going forward. We have young guys like Subban, Emelin, Diaz and Weber on the team and we also have great prospects like Beaulieu, Tinordi, Roussel and Trouba who should all be in the NHL in the next few years. Veterans like Grorges and Gleason will be important for their development.

Phoenixs-Ray-Whitney-thriving-at-39-O1RKM8G-x-large.jpg

Detroit is very happy to add a veteran presence like Ray Whitney for 2 seasons at 3.5M a year. He has shown he can still play and score on a very defensive minded club in Phoenix. Being placed into a more uptempo system and playing on a line with either Henrik Zetterberg or Pavel Datsyuk, his numbers will only improve.

After losing out on both Suter and Parise, despite offering each of them contracts equal to those they received from other teams (**** you guys) to come play for NJ together, the Devils will rely mostly on gumption and youth to compete next season.

We've added Dustin Penner at 1 year, $2M, in the hopes he'll revitalize his career.

For the record Parise was ready to sign for less than what he actually signed for if you had reach a deal with Suter...

Sens break the bank in deal for Hemsky

hemsky_ales487_381.jpg

The Ottawa Senators have successfully managed to add a star player via free agency, inking Alex Hemsky to a 7 year, $51.1 mega deal ($7.3M per year cap hit). The club wasn't thrilled that the price on Hemsky was driven up so high, but we are still very pleased to add Ales to an already talented young forward corps.

Ales will likely start out on the second line, to the right of Kyle Turris and fellow Czech Michael Frolik. The Sens are in the process of adding a top four blue-liner and then we will be finished for the offseason.
