Kunin is a garbage player who shouldn't be playing all the time. Suggesting that Labanc is only slightly worse than that is damning with the faintest possible praise.
Eklund is a youngster getting ice time to develop and prove himself. Barabanov isn't playing tonight as you noted and is bad enough that nobody wanted to trade for him. And we already mentioned that Kunin is a trash player who seems to get a pass because he has the coach's trust.
Shot generation is not great when you aren't doing anything with it.
Ok, so he's 5th in shots/60. But he's:
14th in goals/60 (the only forward behind him is Smith. Couture doesn't count because he's been hurt all year)
18th in xGoals/60 (no forwards are worse).
19th in shooting % (only Smith is worse among Fs)
20th in shooting % on unblocked shots (worst among Fs)
He shoots the puck at a rate more than almost everyone on the roster and accomplishes easily the least with it.
He's not getting hosed here. There's a reasonable case for him to be the worst forward on a team with a bunch of bad forwards. He's also not a responsible guy in his own zone, talented on the draw, or considered to be a strong voice/leader. He doesn't have anything about him that screams "he needs to be in the lineup and it's not fair that he isn't" when the case that he should be in over, say, Kunin or Smith is highly subjective. Could he play over those guys? Sure. Wouldn't be the dumbest decision in the world. Should he play over them? That's highly debatable and you can just as easily argue that he shouldn't as you can that he should.
as has been noted above, he's found himself in the doghouse of basically every Sharks coaching staff he's played under. At some point it's not that the org is handcuffing him and it starts being that maybe there's something about him that is costing him more opportunities.
