Are you legit defending Labanc now?

He’s been bad ever since he signed his contract. And I was a big fan of his who defended him far more than I should have. He’ll be 29 at the end of the year. I’d be surprised if he got anything more than a one year vet min contract at this point.

Hello Kevin labanc, nice to see you finding something useful to do while sitting in the press box. But maybe instead of wasting your time here calling for unfairness, you should actually do what the past 3 coaches has tried to get you to do and play a better all round game.

Labanc's been in 3 consecutive doghouses at this point under 3 coaches and 2 GMs. The ship has sailed on this guy.

Kunin is a garbage player who shouldn't be playing all the time. Suggesting that Labanc is only slightly worse than that is damning with the faintest possible praise.

Eklund is a youngster getting ice time to develop and prove himself. Barabanov isn't playing tonight as you noted and is bad enough that nobody wanted to trade for him. And we already mentioned that Kunin is a trash player who seems to get a pass because he has the coach's trust.

Shot generation is not great when you aren't doing anything with it.

Ok, so he's 5th in shots/60. But he's:
14th in goals/60 (the only forward behind him is Smith. Couture doesn't count because he's been hurt all year)
18th in xGoals/60 (no forwards are worse).
19th in shooting % (only Smith is worse among Fs)
20th in shooting % on unblocked shots (worst among Fs)

He shoots the puck at a rate more than almost everyone on the roster and accomplishes easily the least with it.

He's not getting hosed here. There's a reasonable case for him to be the worst forward on a team with a bunch of bad forwards. He's also not a responsible guy in his own zone, talented on the draw, or considered to be a strong voice/leader. He doesn't have anything about him that screams "he needs to be in the lineup and it's not fair that he isn't" when the case that he should be in over, say, Kunin or Smith is highly subjective. Could he play over those guys? Sure. Wouldn't be the dumbest decision in the world. Should he play over them? That's highly debatable and you can just as easily argue that he shouldn't as you can that he should.

as has been noted above, he's found himself in the doghouse of basically every Sharks coaching staff he's played under. At some point it's not that the org is handcuffing him and it starts being that maybe there's something about him that is costing him more opportunities.
My point has always been - if he's that dogshit you can't put him in the line up, then waive him and send him down to the A. If he is so bad that he is the 3rd emergency player to come in when everyone is healthy, then why persist having him in the squad, going on the road trips, and training. Give that spot to a player showing something in the Cuda with the opportunity to get rewarded with NHL time.

I've never said he is a good player or that he has ever been close to the value of his contract. These are strawman distraction arguments from the simple point that if there is no intention to play him in this team then send him down and give someone like an Ethan Cardwell to get a game or two to reward him for a strong period in the AHL, or even Nathan Todd.

I do agree they should have waived him though.

SNOG announcement

We actually had a "close, but no cigar" effort. It would've been a back-to-back SNOG win.

Also, all this talk about Labanc and Kunin, I’m fast realizing that Justin Bailey is undoubtedly the worst player in a sharks uniform.
There's a reason he's a 28-year-old American who had 82 career NHL games going into the season.

And his $4.725M/yr contract is going to sail in about 14 games. He'll never see that kind of money again.

It's actually worse if one looks at actual pay which is $5.875M this season for Labanc. The only saving grace is that DW didn't give him an 8-year contract.

Chrona's gonna become Josef Korenar 2.0.

This franchise sucks sometimes
Nah, Chrona is actually good the team in front of him however is not. The way he’s getting beat is usually by redirects, the puck bouncing off of skates or bodies multiple times, his own defense,3 on 1’s, or plays coming from behind the net. Hes not getting sniped from the slot or the wings.
He needs to get his rebound control better and started killing plays by covering the puck, I don’t know how many times he could’ve covered a puck after he made save that he tried to keep the play alive on, but it’s a lot.

Waiving him would be a waste of time as well. Nobody was going to take him off our hands and there's nothing to be gained by sending him down anymore.

When he signed Labanc to that contract DW proudly proclaimed that he was forecasting Labanc to be a 60 point player. Labanc is currently sitting at 76 TOTAL points over the life of the contract.

Did DW specify 60pts per year when he said that? Maybe he meant over the life of the contract? In which case he underpaid! :sarcasm:
