The Leafs have terrible defenders period. There is no solid structure. Basically our game is outscore our troubles. You have to admit that we haven't had sound defensive structuring since Babcock got whined out of town. Granted he turned out to be strange. Lastly getting minutes means nothing without coaching.

He should have at the very least been a serviceable D. Someone may actually work with him.
Maybe there was a reason LA didn't want him in a trade? People here wanted the guy in the lineup years ago when he clearly wasn't ready, the low down there was he lacked hockey IQ, he couldn't process the game at a high level. You can't teach that, we've given him forever to figure it out, to the point this year we benched other guys to keep him in there, beyond merit. He's a right D, otherwise he wouldn't even be in the conversation. It isn't over for him, but man he's spinning his wheels and hasn't made any progress I can see for the last two years.

We need Reilly to step up as he has been rather mediocre.

Another player who needs to go if he can't cut it anymore.

Cut the rot out and move on.
He needs to hit the net with his shots, this high runners that end up going the other way has to stop.

completely agree, going into next season the D is made up of McCabe and Benoit all other can be let go or traded. Find younger clones of Boorsh and Edmonson, trade Rielly for someone who can play both sides of the game..........

A mini retool for the next season and I'm looking forward to it.

No more p***y teams.

Yep, we are so much tougher than Boston, and look at how we are destroying them... excited for knuckle-dragging hockey.

Do people really think toughness is what we are missing?

A lot of fates in this organization are tied to this result. If they can't get up for this game, no excuses left for them.
Seems like an MLSE way of conducting business. Habs on the other hand, it didn’t matter that they beat us, fired their GM and Coach anyway

Toughness can be physical, but it can also be mental……..

Doesn't hurt that we've added some, but only 20 goals in the last 10 playoff games makes it obvious what we are missing.

Our physicality and toughness has no question been a factor in this series. Unfortunately it isn't even CLOSE on special teams, that's the difference. Anyone trying to lamely dismiss the fact we have become harder to play against is using a simplistic score metric, when really we've managed to lose the war despite winning the battles. Again special teams and timely saves, even near break even were on the verge of closing them out. If we had a couple more PP goals and decent PK, we'd all be celebrating our tough Leafs. Nobody claims it all you need, but it's helped.

Mind listing the mentally tough players? Currently, our best player is Matthews and it sounds like he would likely go in the mentally fragile side of things.

100% scoring has been our issue... it has been our issue for a long time, and to combat that, we have gotten tougher.

How are we harder to play against if we are losing? Physicality is great but we are getting scored against a lot and not scoring a lot, those should be addressed first.

This has been the same song and dance as years past, we just are hitting slightly more.

The players who were brought in to provide snot have played well, it’s the same players not carrying their weight as the last 6 years……..

You need me to list the ones mentally tough, isn’t it obvious who isn’t mentally tough, might need to windex your rose coloured glasses…….

Which players?

Domi has been the best of the bunch, a lot of players who have played well have also cost us in situations like Bert and Reaves.

Coincidentally, Domi is the least tough, he is just dirty.

Edmundson has overall been bad but has had a good game, maybe he will be better with Brodie, but his pairing is the only pairing struggling.

The fourth line has been good, but I think it is mostly Kampf (Reaves and Dewar have been good, not saying they haven't been).

Our PK has been terrible and features some of this "snot".

We need better players, not just "snot".

You need me to list the ones mentally tough, isn’t it obvious who isn’t mentally tough, might need to windex your rose coloured glasses…….

Matthews has been called mentally weak and he's been our best player.

I honestly think people just say "mentally weak" because they don't have answers and need an excuse.

And yet they're constantly losing playoff games due to bad goaltending and an inability to score.

Yes part of it is playing all these plugs who can't skate or move the puck because you need ~toughness~ in the playoffs but it's far from the only issue.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing 3+ goals for and Samsonov not letting in any stinkers. It's gotta happen more than once this series, right?

Nylander back will be a huge boost for the team. If we score the first goal the games in the bag. Nylander should get the typical return goal from injury.

We lose this the series is over, I truly hope Keefe is hammering home that we should treat this as game 7. Lay everything on the line.
