The thought was about conference play, Eastern vs Western, not geographic location. There are 50 games played against the Western conference: 26 against the Pacific and 24 against the central. Then that would leave 32 games for the Eastern conference: 16 against the Atlantic and 16 against the Metro.

Including today's game, we have played eight games against the Eastern conference, which is a 25% of the total games against the Eastern conference.

Currently, we have only played five games against the Western conference, which is 10% of the total games against the Western conference.

With this current setup, the league is trying to have teams play against their conference more at the end of the season, since the last two playoff spots are wild cards spots that can belong to any team in the conference. Anaheim will face only four Eastern conference teams out of 23 games for the months of March and April to end the season.
