I like the top one a lot better. Bottom one would have to be a lesser pick since I think Lapierre is going to end up with a higher ceiling than McMichael. But yeah that's close I think.

Wow! We have a lot of contracts up next year!

Currently, we are 6.3M over the cap with no players on LTIR (which they can’t do until season starts). So technically we have about 1.8M in space. But I suspect it is hockey trades from here on out.
Damn the entire D core other than Carlson and Fever are UFAs after this next season, heh.

I give the Capitals FA a B. The price for Keumper not as bad as some were predicting and helps the next 2 or 3 seasons with a proven goalie. Brown can be moved up and down the lineup till Wilson is back on the right side plus no guarantee that Oshie will stay healthy for the entire season. Strome helps with the center depth on a prove me contract time.

TC battles will be real: McM versus Strome versus Eller, do Snively and Lappiere force themselves onto the roster. Lot of pressure will be on Eller in my opinion.

We all know Lavi hates rooks but was forced to last year. For those that were called up really curious how they look in the rookie camp to see if they take another step like Protas and Leason. On the center front with Eller a FA next year and potentially a Backstrom retirement if things don't go well 2nd and 3rd line centers will be open.

I gave the Caps an A mostly for effort. Like one poster said, I fear Lavi's reliance on veterans and sitting youngsters. GMBM went after the immediate needs without giving up much and some good deals. The Caps are primed for another playoff run when I was starting to believe they were happy with the Ovy record. Ted has shown again he's not afraid to spend to the salary cap while they're in contention race. The big question to me is Mantha. He needs to stay healthy and produce while taking another level upwards while he has the chance. The draft is the primary reason why I gave the Caps an A so far. There is still a long offseason for GMBM to make more tweaks via trades. Also, I don't worry about Gustafsson. He was a cheap veteran for added depth. Every team who contends signs a guy like him knowing he won't make much of an impact. As far as picks go for the Phoenix poster, anything except the 2023 first can be traded for Chychrun in a package. I personally believe the Caps are high on Fever and I personally think he'll take the next step up after a nice rookie season.

So as of today:

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Oshie
Mantha - Strome - Brown
MAJO - Eller - Sheary
AJF - Dowd _Hathaway
Snively/Leason

Fehervary - Carlson
Orlov - Jensen
Gustafsson - TVR
LUJO/Irwin

Kuemper/Lindgren

LTIR - Backstrom, Hagelin and Wilson

One of Snively, Leason and LUJO would have to pass through waivers in order to be sent to Hershey. I believe it'll most likely be Leason.

I didn't list CMM or Protas as they still can go straight to Hershey without going through waivers. Would prefer CMM getting ice time/experience at Hershey rather going through another season like he just did under Lavy.

Not crazy about the third line of Johansson, Eller and Sheary but we'll see. Eller really battle with COVID last season so we'll see if we see a return of the Tiger from a few seasons ago.

Threre will be injuries for sure during the season so would expect to see the likes of CMM and Protas get call ups.

When Wilson returns, I'd slot him in on the first line and drop Oshie down to the third line.
Sheary - Eller - Oshie looks better.

Come the 23/24 season the forwards could look something like:

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Wilson
Mantha - Strome - Brown (this is based on Backstrom not returning and Strome and Brown perform up to our expectations)
Snively - CMM - Oshie/Protas
AJF - Dowd - Protas/Oshie

This would mean the departures of Backstrom (9.2), MAJO (1.1), Eller (3.5) , Sheary (1.5), Hagelin (2.75) and Hathaway(1.5). That's 10 mil in cap space without including Backstrom. Caps will need the cap to address the resigning of Orlov, Jensen, TVR, and Brown who will all be UFAs as well as RFAs Strome, Fehervary and AJF.

This is a good recaps and has many of the same tenants i posted above although I think Snively will be in the lineup and likely on the second line which may be above his skill/position level but I do know that the caps signed him with expectation of being on second line (not third and definitely not 4th). I also belive we signed Mojo as a 13th / insurance option but if he earns it, then maybe he plays.

for next year, I think both Sheary and Hathaway will get more money elsewhere and we'll part ways. I suspect we'll see a next generation of 4th line to include AJF/Malenstyn on left and Leason on right. Not going to play Oshie or Protas on 4th line. And this will ultimately be dependent on where Lavi gets extended which I hope he does for 2 years so we can have some consistent coaching. I'd trade out Murry and would love to bring back Canberry as Associate Coach and groom him for head coach.

So I’m piecing together some do the replies so far, and attempting to summarize accurately. Chychrun for:

A) Eller, McMichael, Fehervary, '25 2nd
B) Eller, Lapierre, Fehervary, '23 1st

I’d do either of these. Though I’d prefer to go with option B.

Eller and Fehervary are throw-ins to me, so it becomes either:

A) McMichael + 2025 2nd Round Pick
B) Lapierre + 2023 1st Round Pick

McMichael has already shown NHL aptitude and has a good chance to be much better than he showed last year. He can contribute now.

Lapierre is a question mark at this point, so I’d be willing to give up a more valuable draft pick to go with him.

I think Eller + Lapierre + Fehervary + 2023 First Round pick for Chychrun would be a great deal for Washington.

no on B. don't want to trade Lappy or the '23 1st. that's the future right there, IMO. option A maybe though don't like giving up 2 strong prospects in 1 deal.

Why the lack of respect for Fehervary?
he thinks Fever is already all he'll ever be. 🤷

I grade the offseason an F

Clearly we failed on signing an All-Star team, didn't sign even 1 50 goal scorer, not 1 Norris winner, not 1 Vezina winner

If we're not going to be President Trophy winner, what's the point

Fire GMBM. How does he let other teams get players that should clearly be Caps?

I've been informed there are 31 !!! other teams

I change my grade to an A

You need more players like Fever. He can be Carlson's partner for less than Chychrun and maybe that pair overall effectiveness will not be less (imagine Fever backing up Carlson's pinching and progressive loss of speed).

Giving Lapierre and 1st on top of that is madness.

PS: Went with A. I want the season to start tomorrow at the latest.

PPS: Miro-Lapierre is potential 1st line out of Caps own system. I'd not trade that for anyone. It's a glimpse of hope for post-Ovi. Get them Brown like player (and those types are available much more often) and see them perform. $$$.

Why the lack of respect for Fehervary?
Most caps fans and the team were quite impressed and pleased with Fehervarys first year although he really went downhill the last half of the season. Most of us think he will improve, Twabby does not

I think Fehervary will improve, but Chychrun is precisely the type of player we hope he turns into. I would not hesitate moving Fehervary for what is essentially the best-case-scenario of continued Fehervary development, especially when the player we're acquiring is only 18 months older that Fever.

This is a good round up. As other of mentioned I really have no confidence with Lavi when it comes integrating the younger faster players. Majo/Eller/Strome are going to have to really do well in TC if Snively/McM look good in TC.
