Hold the post. In that situation, Kreider couldn't do anything to score if he just holds the post and stays still.
Sure, if he had psychic powers and knew what was going to happen in advance, so that he could ignore the play and just block the spot where the shot would be coming from, that would have worked out nicely.
In reality, he was following the play and had already begun to shift his weight in order to slide across and defend the far post. The puck arrived at his feet from behind the net just as he was mid-pivot, and he had to reverse that motion instantly. There was no option to just stand still… the game is played on skates, and his shift in balance had already set in motion a brief separation from the post.
In that split second, there was one other Rangers player within shouting distance of the net, and that player was allowed to go unmolested to the crease and jam the puck over Andersen’s skate before he had time to take any other action besides using his glove to cover as much of the post as he could.
