Norway is playing something close to their IIHF U20 Div1 team for Denmark i December. Only extra addition will likely be Ole Bjørvik Holm. There is a lot of positive things happening in Norwegian hockey past couple of years, but for the lack of international competitions below world juniors during covid many interesting players seem to have escaped the scouts entirely. Some lack of size might be an excuse, but typically Emil Lilleberg was drafted as an over-ager this year, and can work as an illustration. In this squad there are three players logging steady minutes in the SHL (Mikkel Oby, Philip Granath and Martin Johnsen) and players like Eskild Bakke Olsen and Sander Vold Engebraten (D) are raking up points in the top Norwegian league. Norway is also for the first time really ramping up on the management side with additions Head Coach Tobias Johansson (Frölunda, Sweden) and impressively assited by Stephen Wiedler from University of Vermont and development coach John Riley from Philadelpha Flyers. I have never been more optimistic on the prospects of Norwegian junior hockey, the federation is really doing a good job these days and I would not be surpised at all if Norway won this 4-nations tournament even if the other teams arrive with their best rosters. If anyone has any roster news on Germany, Switzerland or Slovakia for this tournament it would be highly appreciated!

German Team
Niklas Lunemann replaces Nikita Quapp. Daniel Schwaiger replaces Korbinian Geibel.
Do you know how this team compares to the team Germany will be running with for the World Juniors?

It's hard to say before Lillehammer. With the goalkeepers it is only a question of whether Lunemann is there or not. That Quapp is not there leaves room for speculation. Performance-wise, Tiefensee is the weakest of the four candidates in my opinion.

The defense practically sets itself up. Szuber, Glötzl, Dziambor, Münzenberger, Stowasser, Geibel and Pilu should make the running. Klein has an outside chance. Rausch is the only 2003 in the extended squad. I think his chances are slim.

In the offense, there is no way around Elias, Borzecki, Samanski, Volek, Blank, Eham and Leonhardt. that's as far as I dare go, because I haven't seen some candidates on the ice long enough or at all.
Herrmann is playing a good season in DEL2.
Nikolaus and Thomas Heigl have also already shown good performances.

Normally, the younger crop always gets their spots to gain experience for the next year. But this time they have a hard time, because the 2002 are simply better in the top and width. It will be interesting to see how the coaches solve this.

P.S. Tim Sezemsky replaces Adrian Klein.

Slovakia wins in OT 5-4, despite blowing a 4-0 lead. Primarily because of penalty trouble this occurred. Only 9 forwards were dressed and among the missing was our best player. I was impressed by Strbak especially, he had 2 points and was overall solid.

Norway - Switzerland 3-6. Switzerland clearly the better team first half, but Norway progressed and clicked better as the game moved on. Special teams was not good though, and goaltending below expectations.

Quite a good result for Norway, this Swiss team is close to what they will send to the WJC. Missing a few key pieces but other than this is it. Looks like it will be a competitive tournament to the end

Norway - Germany ended in an empty net goal 2-4. The broadcast only worked for the third period that was dominated by Norway hunting for an equalizer with many good opportunities. Looks by the numbers that Germany was dominating the first two periods. Norway is keeping up pretty well in this company, that bodes well for the IIHF Div1 Championship. But then there's Belarus, and their goalie ... gonna be a pretty open championship between Belarus, Norway and probably Latvia. Phillip Granath is tiny, but really fun to watch for Norway. Too small to be drafted, but so was Zuccarello.

No the swiss team is not absolutely close to the WJC.
They miss Kiam Bichsel the great talent that play in Sweden U20.
And they are missing about 15 players that play in USA(OHL, WHL,QHMCL).

Swiss still have the majority of their strongest euros besides Bischel. Missing from WHL, Derungs and Reichle. Streule could be included but I question whether he would even fit in the top 6 defense. Zanetti and Dionico from the OHL. Cannonica, Robin and Biasca from the Q. Fust from the USHL. How many of their NA guys would actually play their way into the team? There’s like 16 or 17 Swiss players in the CHL but how many of them are actually capable of cracking the roster for the WJC? This isn’t even meant as offensive, but just because players are overseas doesn’t guarentee them spot. Slovaks have plenty of players in NA who won’t make the final team either. Thus Swiss team is almost exclusively 2002 born, so it’s clearly an important evaluation tournament and perhaps they’re will be more guys brought in from this team to WJC

Huge game from Simon Knak(NAS) for SUI today. 4 Goals - 2 even strength, 1 SH and a PP.

Norway beats Slovakia 5-3. Final standings when it gets updated. Stats page here. With all kinds of bias, Norway dominated Slovakia in this game and had plenty of missed opportunities including a missed PS. Slovakia was dangerous and productive in PP but not much else. Granath with a three point evening, together with Dahl, Johnsen & Engebråthen most noticable. Nice bounce back by goalie Stensrud who ended on 91 %, joined by Plogås at 90,3 % against Germany - and the goalie situation suddently looks allright. After a slow start, this team is starting to look as good as I hoped for and very much looking forward IIHF Div1. Probably gonna be Belarus as a favourite due their outlayer generation, but Norway certainly looks competetive. Whatever happens, the future of Norwegian hockey looks better than it has in a long while.
