It's all because the Wings went and overachieved in a recent 16-game stretch where a recent poster here predicted they'd get 3 wins. Instead, they got hit hard by injuries and still managed 5 wins in 15 games, with one of the 16 games against Ottawa getting postponed.

Their defense leave a lot to be desired, SuperStaal has played every game.

If the games against BUF are any indication, the Wings don't do well against high offense bad defense teams, so this game is a toss up at best.

Panthers is in a hunt for Bedard, let's help them.
Could NHL change lottery rules before draft to punished teams that tanks ?

Montreal owns the Panthers 1st pick though.

As for tanking, after that World Juniors performance by Bedard, we know it's coming. Teams won't "intentionally" lose games, but there will be some weird stuff going on in the 2nd half. I expect the deadline to be busy, and many of the bottom feeders will be putting players on IR and locking them up for the season with season ending surgery with any chance they get. Also, wouldn't be surprised to see some terrible goalies getting chances to play.

When in the actual hell can we expect to make the playoffs again. Seems that goaltending is still a question mark 7 years into the rebuild as is goal scoring and premium offensive and even defensive dmen. Yzerman has done a mediocre job. Tons of teams have rebuilded in less than 7 seasons.

Which gives Steve 3 more after this one. And that's even omitting the hole that Kenny dug for him.

This. We've been patient enough. Yzerman is forever a legend in Detroit, but he needs to start making more meaningful moves instead of constantly just building through depth signings and the draft. No more of this low and slow, maybe in a few more years we'll be ready to maybe think about challenging for a Wild Card, we'll be judged on performance instead of win/losses garbage.

It's been 7 years. That's too long. This isn't Buffalo or Columbus. They were supposed to take a MAJOR step forward this year, and here we sit in early January with the exact number of wins at this point of last season.

Our P% is .54, up from .45 last season. That's not a step forward?

Yeah. He definitely should have expected Bertuzzi and Fabbri to be hurt most of the season, Vrana to enter the PAP, and Ned to forget how to play goaltender.

I don't know what the rest of this season holds. But I think next year is the first year that anybody could say, "make the playoffs or Yzerman deserves some heat".

They still can make it this year.

"Twenty-five years ago the Detroit area was abuzz with reports of a wandering "liger" - a big cat that's a cross between a lion and a tiger - that had gotten loose from... somewhere. There are no ligers known to be in town these days but tonight there are some Panthers from Florida being let loose in Little Caesar's Arena. Detroit fans, players, and coaches alike will all be trying ensure that it's the Panthers doing the stalking for three periods and not the Red Wings. Come-from-behind victories after all may be exciting, but they are often as unreliable as reports of a liger on 8 mile." - Plausible Keats
