Treliving is ruthless with RFAs. Jon Gillies (last contract) and Buddy Robinson get 1-ways but Kylington gets a 2-way

Kind of weird that they'd ask him to do the two way. If he gets sent down, I can't see him clearing waivers so he'd make his NHL salary anyways. I get that he had zero leverage, but throwing him the bone of making it a 1 way would at least give him a bit of a win and would have (likely) no impact on the Flames as he'd either make the team or would get claimed.

Cap Friendly shows him as an RFA ineligible for arbitration at the end of this contract again.

I dont the Flames asking, but not willing to budge. I really hope they let him play and dont constantly pull him from the lineup for a washed up vet and/or someone will limited upside. He needs to learn NHL defense by playing, not being in the pressbox.

It's only ok when a 28 year old rental with no future on the team makes a mistake in the playoffs

Why would management feel they need to make it a 2-way contract? There’s no way he’d make it through waivers

If I am a Flames player, I wouldn't feel any loyalty to the organization. This jerk would screw me every chance he got for nothing

No wonder Brodie walked...so will Johnny.

I was just reading about the tentative agreement between the NHLPA and the NHL for a 56 game season starting January 13. The agreement still needs to be ratified, but there will be no exhibition games and teams can have a 23 man roster and a 4 to 6 man taxi squad.

For the purposes of Olly's contract, this is what it could mean.

Players on one-way deals will have their contracts dealt with the same way whether they’re on an NHL roster, assigned to a taxi squad, or sent to the AHL, meaning they will be subject to 10 per cent salary deferral and 20 per cent escrow payments. The players who are in the AHL on two-way contracts will have a prorated salary based on how many games are played in that league, with a 40 per cent minimum salary payout. And players who are on the taxi squad with two-way contracts will receive AHL pay with NHL benefits." - per Elliotte Friedman

So there is probably motivation there for Kylington to avoid the taxi squad or even being waived to the AHL. If he is claimed by another team off of waivers, I'm not sure if he'd take a roster spot or could be put on that team's taxi squad. My thinking is that he'd bump another player to either the taxi squad or the AHL.

In the end, I believe Oliver will be platooned as the either the 5 or 6 d-man until the injury bug bites (and hopefully its not him) that will allow him to play full time.

Edit: Apparently there was more to the article.

"Essentially the way (taxi squads) will work for all intents and purposes is those players are considered to be in the AHL, that is if they're players who would normally need waivers, you're going to need to clear waivers to be sent to the taxi squad," Johnston explained. "But that taxi squad will be with the NHL team, they'll travel with the team, those players will receive NHL benefits like per diem and the like, but they can be called up at a moment's notice and put into games."

The potential taxi squad idea that may happen might have something to do with it. If someone with a 2 way is on the taxi squad, might only get paid the minor salary unless they play/dress

Oliver should be developed as a PP1 specialist. When the Gaudreau “bump back” is defended then Kylington is another diverse option through the neutral zone.

He has also shown some pretty amazing glimpses of elite o-line maneuvering.

It’s a challenge to him...I believe they did the same to Mangiapane last season
