In an effort to "cure" the curse of Harold Ballard in Toronto the Leafs traded Doug Gilmour, Ric Nattress, Kent Manderville, Jamie Macoun and Rick Wamsley, and Toronto sent Gary Leeman, Craig Berube, Alexander Godynyuk, Michel Petit and Jeff Reese on Jan 2, 1992. What was not disclosed was that in order to get Gary Leaman the Flames had to bury Harold Ballard at Center Ice in the Saddledome.
In 2002, the Saddledome hosted a Green Day concert and when Billie Joe Armstrong jumped off the stage his foot pierced the concrete exposing the coffin containing Harold. After several hours Billie Joe was extricated from the coffin with Harold's skull clamped onto the singers foot.
Rumor has it Billie Joe took the skull home with him and months later Green Days Alblum was stolen.
In 2005, after the Flames Stanley Cup run Toronto called to confirm Harolds body was still buried at center ice. Calgary management had to concede that his skull was missing. For 5 years the Flames tried to find Harold's skull to live up to their obligations. Finally in January 2010 after many seances to no adieu Burkie called up Calgary and told management Dion Phaneuf would be the cost for disrespecting Harold.
This is the reason Calgary has yet to truly win a hockey trade since that fateful day Harold was sent to Calgary.
