Well, at the end of the day, this is still a wait-and-see draft for the Flames.
20th - Ryan Poehling
Like most, I'm not sure where this player is heading. He has had moments when he's looked the part, at the WJC or in the AHL last season. The speed of the NHL seems a step too quick but it might just be a question of adjusting. Is he a top-six player or a middle-six or a 4th line guy? I still hold out hope that he'll Nichushkin it.
Should have taken Robert Thomas. MEH
51st - Ukka-Pekka Luukkonen
Still holding out hope and it's a make-it-or-break-it season for the goaltender. He's been brilliant and terrible. Flames need him or Tarasov to be the real deal
Holding out hope
150th - Daniil Tarasov
No doubt about it, he was fantastic in the NHL last season before that injury. But his AHL time has been a mixed bag. Like UPL, needs to find consistency. Regardless, he's a success for a 5th rounder but now the goalposts have moved.
Holding out hope
The six 7th rounders: McGrew, Talvitie, Poddubnyi, Hancock, Boudrias, Latvala.
McGrew has finally had a mostly healthy season, his first since he was 16. Seems to be growing into a role player and leader. Might get an NHL shot in the tire-fire that is the upcoming Sharks season. Probably a bust.
Talvitie had a solid college career and start to his pro career. But his advantages in competitiveness at the lower levels have been evened out in the AHL and he doesn't have enough puck skill to crack a top-9. Probably a bust.
Boudrias really came on later in his Q career and had a good rookie season in the ECHL but doesn't look like he has real NHL potential. Busting.
Poddubnyi, Hancock and Latvala are all busts.
