Pirates select MANAGER, Clint Hurdle.

He is working his magic with one of the lower payrolls in MLB today, and has had one of the betters teams in major league baseball over the last 3 years. Also took the Colorado Rockies to a World Series. Hurdle, a good mix of old school and new school analytics.

Pirates selection of CF, Dom DiMaggio.

So glad I remembered this guy. I was close to drafting him last year and this year in the ATD. If I would have remembered sooner, he would have been my first choice in this draft.

Nicknamed "The Little Professor", he is now overshadowed by his famous brother Joe, (brother Vince was also a major leaguer), but Dom was a top CF for 10 years in the AL. And one of the best ball hawks in mlb history.

His prowess as a CF is well documented, and borne out by his 2.92 Range/game which is 4th all time.

Dom was an All-star 7 of his 10 years.

He was not just a great glove, he was an excellent batter.

career slash, .298/.383/..419 for an OPS of .802, an OPS+ 110

with that .383 OBP, he makes a perfect leadoff hitter for the Pirates.

Very pleased to have Dom on the team.

Wanted another strong lefty starter option, and Bob Veale gives the Pirates just that. At 6'6'', he is an intimidating presence on the mound.

Big, effective pitcher, that could eat innings up as well. Seasons of 279, 268, 266, 245, 225, and 202 innings pitched.

78 complete games, 20 shutouts.

Pirates selection of Third Baseman, First Baseman and Catcher, Todd Zeile.

Able to handle to multiple positions if needed. Probably won't see a lot of playing time, but he is a good insurance policy to have on any managers bench, giving the Pirates good flexibility, if injuries should happen. He will make a valuable, 25th man.

Pirates team overview.

The starting lineup.

Great table setters at the top of the lineup.

Leadoff hitter, Dom DiMaggio (R) with a ..298 batting average and a .383 OBP, and some pop too, with an .802 OPS.

Pirates have a 4 time batting champ in the 2nd spot with Bill Madlock (R). A great contact hitter. Averaged only 46 K's per 162. Also some pop, OPS+ 123. career slash .305/.365/.442

In the third spot, a two time batting champion, Dave Parker (L). An .810 career OPS, (OPS+ 121), Parker has NL MVP to his credit, over 2700 hits, and 7 time All star.

Those top 3 should be fairly constant and play the entire season, with a timely rest, if needed.

The 4-5- spots will depend on the pitching matchup and handedness. In these spots will be George Selkirk (L), Tony Perez (R) or Al Oliver (L). Selkirk will be a mainstay, and will be a cleanup hitter or 5th depending on the Perez/Oliver platoon.

Selkirk with a BA of .290, a superb OBP of .400, and a SLG of .483 for an OPS of .883. (OPS+ 127).

Oliver rakes righties and will get a ton of starts at 1st, and can play any OF position if needed. Vs. RHP, career slash of .316/.360/.480 for a OPS of .840. Oliver is a career .300+ hitter 18 seasons, with over 2700 hits.

Perez rakes lefties, with a split of .293/.361/.498 for an OPS of .859. Perez a HOF has 379 career bombs.

In the 6th spot will be Smokey Burgess (L) . An excellent hitting catcher. Over 18 seasons, career slash of .295/.362/.446 for an OPS of .807 and OPS+ of 116. Another great contact hitter, with an average of ONLY 26 strikeouts per 162.

Brandon Philips and Dick Groat will be mainstays in the lineup, patrolling and locking down 2b and SS respectively, with plus gloves and also some offensive credentials.

Phillips has had oWAR seasons of 4.0, 3.0, 2.9, 2.8, 2.6, and 2.5.

Groat has a NL batting title to his name, as well as an NL MVP. This 5 time AS has had oWAR seasons of 6.0, 4.5, 4.0, 3.2, 2.9, and 2.0.

Pirates starting pitching.

Buccos will carry 12 pitchers going north. 6 starters and 6 relievers. Will go with a 5 man rotation, with the #5 and #6 guys swapping out depending on the series. If a righty heavy lineup, (which one team has) then the series will feature all RH starting pitching. If more balanced lefty, then we have 2 top notch lefty SP to combat that lineup.

The manager will decide according to match ups. And all pitchers if skipped will be stretched up in simulated games with our pitching coach and staff to keep their arms stretched out.

Starters

Lefty starters.

Wlibur Cooper (1912-1926) , 116 ERA+, 216 wins, 2.89 ERA, career WAR 49

Bob Veale...13 year career, (1962-1974) ERA+ 113..Era 3.07...FIP 2.76....8.0 K's/9...24.8 WAR

Big, effective pitcher, that could eat innings up as well. Seasons of 279, 268, 266, 245, 225, and 202 innings pitched.

78 complete games, 20 shutouts.

Also, though he will start out in the pen as a long man, Harvey Haddix can pressed into service if injury befalls either of the other lefties in the Pirates rotation.

Haddix, 1952-1965.....136 wins, 29.9 WAR......108 ERA+, played in 2 games in the 1960 World Series for Pirates and he recorded wins in both appearances.
