I posted the following on the main Board in a thread having nothing to do with the Kings and it might be of greater interest here, if only as a curiosity.

They drafted first overall in 1967...

That's cheating, I know, because that took place before the advent of the universal Amateur Draft.

But more seriously, the Kings used to be afraid of using their 1st-round picks when they joined the league.

It is only in 1980 that they kept their 1st-round pick for the first time.

The first 11 were traded away.

Some notorious players drafted with 1st-round picks traded by the Kings:

1970 - Reggie Leach
1972 - Steve Shutt
1973 - André Savard
1974 - Mario Tremblay
1975 - Pierre Mondou
1977 - Ron Duguay
1979 - Raymond Bourque

2nd-round picks? They kept a few of those, but also traded a few:

1970, 1971 (Larry Robinson), 1973, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1978.

So in their first 11 years in the Amateur Draft, they traded away all 11 of their 1st-round picks and 7 of their 2nd-round picks.

through it all, the kings still managed to draft the likes of billy smith and butch goring, though they both achieved great fame elsewhere,

I.E.
I believe it was a little easier to draft then because the guys were 20 and a little more seasoned then they are now, but damn what a team they would of had , notice a lot of those guys went on to montreal greatness some due too us getting vachon but most because of bad bad management decisions

Actually, the Vachon trade did not include any draft picks.

Going to Montréal were Denis DeJordy, Dale Hoganson, Noel Price and Doug Robinson.
