The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Andrei Markov to a two years contract worth $5,750,000 per season with a no movement clause.

"We were not able to reach an extension with Markov after the playoffs which lead us to trade his rights to another team. At the end of the day, we feel that Markov was the best defenseman available in the free agent pool and we are excited to have him back for two more years."

Vancouver signs Jonas Hiller to a 2 year contact worth a total of 6 million. We feel Hiller was stuck in a bad situation in Anaheim with preference for Anderson and Gibson being evident. He's a capable #1 goalie and we look forward to him sharing the crease with Eddie Lack this coming season.

Sharks Spend a Fortune

:sharks

San Jose Acquires Nik Kulemin, Ryan Miller, and Matt Niskanen in Free Agency.

We identified three final weaknesses in our team- winger depth, a d-man to pair with Sekera or Vlaisc, and a top goalitender. We got the three players we were most interested in addressing them.

Matt Niskanen: 7 years 7m per; full NTC
Ryan Miller: 3 years 5.25m per; full NTC in years 1/2; year 3 must provide list of 10 he will approve to
Nik Kulemin: 2 years 3.5m per.

In Matt Niskanen, we got, who we feel was the only young top pairing d-man available in this years FA class. Boyle's role on the team can only be filled by committee, and while Sekera and Demers will take a good portion of the PPQB role, we think Niskanen can really help our transition game, and will see plenty of PP time as well. He will play with elite defenseman Marc-Eduoard Vlasic, and we will ask him them to dominate elite competition, playing behind Marleau, Staal, and new acquisition Kulemin. Niskanen brings excellent skating to a defense that offers that attribute in spades, and will help our forwards to play very fast.

Matt was signed to a whopping 7 year 7m deal. We may have been able to get him for a hair less, but as he was our #1 target, we were willing to overpay, as he is only just entering his prime. Matt received a full NTC.

Ryan Miller was another huge acquisition. Say what you want about Miller in St. Louis, but the guy has consistently proven to be a premier goalie in the NHL. We have him firmly in the top 8. At 33, we plan to reduce his workload, as Stalock is an incredibly promissing goalie, but he had only played more than 45 games once in his career- at all levels. Expect Miller to play 50 games, and Stalock around 32, keeping them both fresh for the SC playoffs. At 3 years 5.25m for 3 years, we felt we got a great deal on Miller. Miller has a full NTC the first two years, and a limited NTC in year 3 (must provide list of 10 teams he will approve a trade to).

The Sharks have traditionally been an excellent penalty killing team, however, that has long been on the back of Marleau and Pavelski. The acquisition of Kulemin and Hansen, along with improved play from Nieto and Desjardins, means that these two won't be the only premier penalty killers. We will look to move Marleau into a reduce pk role, so he can focus on scoring. In addition, we felt Kulemin can score 20 goals on the wing with Staal and Marleau, while having the ability to get in on the forecheck and cause havoc with physicality, while taking care of their own zone. These three will get the opposing team's top line every game. Kulemin was signed for 2 years at 3.5m per

:sharks Tyler Kennedy is on the block for the first team that offers a pick for him.

Tyler is good for 20-40 points, and would be a natural fit for any team in need of a decent third liner. Unfortunately, it didn't work out in SJ, but Tyler is still a solid player.

The Ottawa Senators have agreed to terms on contracts with free agent forwards Ales Hemsky and Tom Pyatt. Hemsky signed a 2 year deal worth $10M while Pyatt agreed to a one year contract worth $650,000.

"We know what Ales is capable of, he will add a much-needed skill infusion to our top six. Tom is a good foot soldier that will fit well in our bottom six."

The Winnipeg Jets have annouced the signing of forward Leo Komarov to a 4 years, 12 millions contract, NTC included.

''We are thrilled to add a player like Komarov. Leo fits exactly our style of player. He's a fast forechecker,he's a physical beast, an hitting machine, finishes very checks, and very hard. He's a very solid defensive player, great in his own-end and on the PK. A guy that can chip in offensively as well, was a KHL All-Star this year. One of the best agitator in hockey, while doing it by staying very disciplined. A natural born leader with a great work-ethic, wearing a letter for a lot of his team throughout his career. Leo also brins a lot of winning pedigree to our team, won a KHL Gagarin Cup, a WC gold medal, while adding a bronze medal in the WJCU20 and in the Olympic. We are very happy to add him, will be a big contributor and piece to our team''.

:wings have signed a one-year contract worth $1.200m with Devan Dubnyk.

It's a bit of a gamble, but we want to work with him and give him the opportunity to prove he belongs in the NHL. He's slotted to be Jimmy Howard's backup for this year, giving Mrazek another full year in the AHL.
