Expect increased level of talent from Russia by 2020

My thoughts are that in 2020 we will see a n new generation of players born in Putin era. Let me explain. 2001 is when Chechnya war ended and I personally consider 2002-present stable Russian period post Perestroika. 1991-2000 were some of the worst years in Russia history with dying population, poverty, heavy drugs and horrible war with own population (Chechnya). Starting in 2002 and on things started changing for better including for hockey. I believe the amount of ice rinks built in these years is unmatched to any other years in Russia. Some wealth and appearance of the middle class.

All of this summarized can lead me to a prediction that in 2020 we will see a noticeable change in the talent level. I expect better quality of players and teams and junior levels and several years after that at all levels.

Actually my thoughts as well - it is hard not to notice the talent depth, comparing, for example, with WJC-2013 roster. D is still an ongoing issue though, but it has to do with coaching more than player individual talent level, imo.

Not yet at the U-20 level. Talent is not up with USA/CAN/SWE. Wait 3 or so years.

I agree with you. The number and quality of talented players has a correlation with standard of living and the availability of hockey resources for talented kids to take advantage of. The creation of the KHL followed by the creation of the MHL totally changed the prospects for young kids growing up who have the ability to become good hockey players.

The number of indoor and outdoor rinks (quality of outdoor rinks seems to be improving), the availability of trained and competent coaches and the regeneration of hockey schools allow for major improvement, but the kids born in 1993-98 have only had about 5 or 6 years to benefit from the real changes. There has already been some improvements, but the real results probably won't become visible (e.g., not just relying on an exceptional coach to compete for the Gold Medal at the WJC) until the next decade.

Russian prospects are notoriously difficult to scout. There are prospects that peak early (Kitsyn) and those that break out later in their careers (Ozhiganov).

There has been a trend of over-agers (even triple overagers) picked in recent drafts and every year there seems to be new, under-the-radar players that break out (Panarin, Zaytsev, Schipachyov, Barabanov, etc.)

In all honesty, we don't know how good this recent generation is yet.

We can however make conclusions on the draft classes from a decade ago or so.

We're a bit lacking of NA development success stories at D so far: Zadorov, Mikulovich, Sleptsov, Osipov, Lyamkin, Vladimirov, Baldayev, D. Sergeyev, A. Sergeyev, Sharipzyanov, Boikov, Pedan don't look too good so far. There are successfull examples of Provorov, Kulikov and possibly Valiyev though.

Not sure I'd even call Kulikov a success considering how good he should have been.

I don't think sending anyone to North America is a good thing.

Funny, Kulikov ended up the opposite of his draft day scouting report.

He was known as a offensive-minded D who needed work on his physical game.

This guy recently got his first point.

BTW, Tryamkin seems to be exceeding expectations. I thought he would be 1 and done in NHL. He might be one of those players that is better on small ice. Very impressive tools, if his hockey IQ improves...

BTW, Provorov doesn't count. He came over when very young. NA game is pretty much all he knows. He would actually need to make adjustments in Europe. Dmitry Zaytsev is a similar case.

Zaitsev came to NA just last season, he can't be the same special case as Provorov.

Arkady Rotenberg gave interview to Izvestia about Russian hockey, he is de facto boss of FHR.

- Russia has 516 hockey rinks, plan to build around 400.
- Aim is to increase number of kids playing hockey by 100 000 (now 93k)
- build outdoor rinks for federal universities (student league was created)
- launching register of players, coaches and hockey facilities
- soon launching national criterias for evaluating of quality of hockey schools and coaches. Criterias for education of coaches
- regulations of agents bussiness and "working with parents". A.Rotenberg said: "Agents brainwash parents of russian prospects saying "only in NA are conditions for right development of a player, not in Russia"

Exactly. We in Tatarstan don't need such a program from above, because we are way ahead already. And without much talk. We still have issues to sort out such as corruption within the better schools. It has to be adressed with the utmost determination.

Facts:

We have rinks at nearly every school in big cities and many schools outside of them and they operate in the evernings(lighting) for kids to come play casually. We have plenty of hockey schools operating at many rinks. We have 2 KHL teams that give the kids the whole ladder of opportunity to grow through schools, MHL, VHL, KHL.

Maybe Mr. Rotenberg should just come to Kazan and ask some people what to do and how to do it.

And last but not least girls hockey is growing too.
