End of fighting in the NHL?

Maybe it's been discussed lately(?). But they made visors mandatory (grandfathered in, so every new player in the NHL from 13/14 season+ must wear visor?).

You can't take off your helmet (yes they found a loop-hole, temporarely, NHL will stop that pretty soon though)

So in summary:
So in a near future, everyone will wear visors, and you can't take off the helmets -> Players who wants to fight must fight with visors... We all know it's more or less impossible to fight with visors on, easy to break your hands, get cuts etc, hard to get a good punch in...

Am I the only one who loathe the new NHL?

And what's up with banning tucked-in-jersey, the greatest player ever had his jersey tucked in his whole career...what a mockery

You're not alone in this. If they want to fight, let them fight. Also jersey tuck in is stupid rule. I don't like these "upgrades" at all, although I think for safety of players visors is good rule!

Not necessarily. Reason your don't see fights during playoffs is injury and an imbalance in line ups. Fights do serve a purpose. Sometimes it's stupid some times it's not.

Let fights stay man. And the jersey tuck rule is atrocious

Yet, many people do not have a problem with staged fighting if it is between two high-caliber players. Look at the Jamie Benn and Joe Thornton fight for an example.

Fighting will always be part of the game and it should be. I do however think we need to look at the physical and mental toll it takes on designated tough guys. I They seem to care more about hurting their knuckles when they fight than protecting their brain. It is not just the punches either...it is the takedowns and slamming of heads on the ice that is the greater concern. Ice is a lot more unforgiving than hands.

Screw fighting. Nobody would miss it. Guys don't stay in the league any more just by fighting. Let the game progress. Fighting is holding back the game. People equate it with roller derby.

The thing that people forget when they say back in the day people didn't have to wear helmets or visors, they also didn't have tens of millions on insurance for the players. I am sure most of the rules for visors, helmets staying on is pressure from those companies.

They never mentioned they will stop the fight if helmets come off, both fighters will have an agreement and it will just be 2mins of 4on4. So with the players knowingly breaking the rules, it removes the fault of the NHL from any potential injuries.

The jerseys are mostly likely the start of advertising around the bottom, so they want the players to be used to having them untucked. That being said, I doubt its called alot once season starts.

I think its because a lot of people hate roster spots being taken up to put on a sideshow. At least in that case you have two actual hockey players fighting.

Alright so when your top line player gets elbowed in the face and is injured for the rest of the season nobody from your team is allowed to step in. Got that?

You just gotta pretend like it neverr happend.



Ofc you need fighting in the NHL, it's one the biggest impacts you can make on the ice.

And I'm guessing that if they did get rid of fighting and you got into a fight that you will be suspended. (Pretty lammmeeee)

The NHL is barely a blip on the north American sports radar right now, and the 0.01% of limp wristed hockey safety nannies have no business telling real hockey fans that fighting (one of the games most popular elements) does not belong in the game. The NHL can't afford fans just walking away from the sport.

Look at what's happening in the south and southwest. The Thrashers moved, the Coyotes should've moved but the league somehow went through hoops to keep them on life support for 5 more years. Dallas has poor attendance, Florida can't give tickets away. Fans down there love violence, mayhem, pro wrestling etc. They love FIGHTING. Maybe if the NHL ratchets up the mayhem the game would be more appealing down south.

Only because penalties and/or suspensions have more impact in a seven game series than in the regular season. Were it not for that, there would be a lot more fighting in the playoffs.

I am fine with fighting but what I hate is the scrums that take place every time someone takes a big hit. It used to be that if you got tagged with a nice clean hit, you got tagged and only dirty or cheap hits resulted in scrums and fights. But now every big hit, whether clean or not, results in a stupid scrum.

I don't want to take fighting out of the game, but it's becoming a joke. Everything is so choreographed and heartless.

Fighting in the 1970s:
1) Player A smacks Player B in the head with his stick
2) Player B grabs player A by the hair and starts throwing.
3) Five or six teammates pile on, with refs in tow. Maybe throw a fan in there for good measure, especially if it's near the glass.
4) The game resumes half an hour later when the players are finally wrestled into the penalty box with cops in between.

That might have been "Neanderthal", but it was real. And until they got the stick fouls under control, it was the only way to prevent players killing each other in retaliation.


Fighting in the 2010s:
1) Player A and Player B stand at center ice during warmups to chat about each other's kids and confirm an appointment to fight later.
2) At an opportune time when it won't hurt either team strategically, Player A and Player B line up opposite each other on the faceoff and wait for the puck to drop.
3) Player A removes player B's helmet; Player B returns the favor.
4) Both players grab each other's jerseys and lock up their arms. The fight consists of a bunch of jersey jabs and dry humping.
5) After a mental count of about 15 seconds, Player A waves for the linesmen to intervene. Player B stops throwing jersey jabs, because he wouldn't want to take advantage of his buddy.
6) The players shake hands, which morphs into a bro-hug. On the way to the box Player B tweets about what a good guy Player A is and posts a selfie of them fishing.
7) Player A gets an extra minor for having his jersey tucked. Player B is out 6 months with a concussion.

This stuff is not fighting, it's violent dancing. It's not fun to watch and serves no purpose in the game. If they want to get rid of it, I won't miss it.
