I ... don't hate this.

At worst, Gagner is cheaper to buy out. I hated the team acquiring Spooner from the get go, so acquiring anything for him is a bonus.

Sam can also play C, is right handed, and can play the PP.

That happened this year. Is Gagner 26? You're already exaggerating.

With any other club he’d still be in the AHL. He’s only playing in Edmonton because it’s a feel good PR story.
He’ll Gagner was the one who reportedly initiated the talks to get himself back here because he knew it would be his only chance to play in the NHL again.

No, he's in the NHL because the Oilers have possibly the worst group of forwards in the entire league so other teams AHL fodder can crack our top 9. Despite not doing anything special, fresh out of the AHL Gagner was one of the better Oilers today. Friggin Colby Cave was on the pp today, thats how bad the forward depth is.

Also injected enough skill on PP2 to actually have scoring chances. Only took 60 games for the second unit to get a scoring chance. :naughty:

Absolutely...he always was a solid puck distributor.
Its really hard to cheer against Gagner IMO.

While Eberle is garbage now and has only 26 points all season for the Islanders, that's somehow still more points than all the players Edmonton brought in the trade sequence: Strome (14), Spooner (5) and Gagner combined (0).

Couldnt even try Spooner once in a top 6 role before cutting bait? It's one thing to make bad trades, its another to not even give your bad trade a chance to turn out okay.

Anyways, Gagner is back. Damn that's funny. He's been worse since he left E-Town I beleive. But atleast now he knows his spot and doesn't have the Edmonton Young Gun entitlement. We can now safely play him down the lineup without worrying about pissing off the "future"

Spooner got multiple opportunities to drag down both Nuge and McDavid. It turns out throwing the puck away cause you're scared of getting hit isn't very endearing to your linemates or coaches. I tend to be pretty measured and moderate in my criticism but nobody can deny he was garbage.

Other than the Brutal stint in Philly, where he was buried, Gagner has been .500ppg since leaving Edmonton. This would typically put him 4th in production on this whole team any given year.

Gagner has actually put up a few decent seasons since being here.. Was 2nd in pts on a Yotes team behind only Doan one season, Had the 50pts season in Columbus, and is only 29. Not like he's washed up. If we actually play him and give him some minutes he'll produce. The team is severely lacking in talent and Sam has always had that.

Agreed. And he definitely showed it tonight. In his limited touches tonight, Gagner did more with the puck than any forward outside our big 3 did in the last 3 games. F*ck this team sucks.

Not sure if this got posted, but isn't that something?

Nice change of pace although one has to wonder about Gagner's sanity. :D

Seriously though its nice to see a report like that which is the reverse of what we are used to hearing about.
I just had to let go of the string of errors from the day they traded Eberle...now I am fine with Samwise being here.

Umm what? Games where he was put in a top 6 role? You sure it happened? Cause I was looking for it and never saw it,

Well... I mean it’s either Edmonton or AHL fodder on any other team. Let’s not give too much credit to Gagner wanting to come back here, it’s the only team shitty enough to garantee him an actual NHL spot.

That being said, I like Gagner and this acquisition. He’s already our 4th most skilled forward.

He looked pretty good last night, it was refreshing to see some talent outside of the usual 4
Yeah he definitely made some good plays. Love how on the pp he just made the simple play and fired pucks on net. Something that doesn't happen much.

Gagner's partner is from Edmonton. So it makes sense that they'd want to come back. He could become a resident of the city when he retires too.

If Sam would sign a multi year 1,000,000$ contract extension, do we do that for next year? We can bury the entire amount if he does not work out. If he is better than the 14th forward, he makes the team.

Sam might sign this as it gives him probably his best shot at staying in the NHL

I would explore that if I running the team as it is a very low risk move. The only real cost is 1 of 50 roster spots

I think he’s signed for one more season!

The worst thing with this trade? The replacement ranting is back in full mode!

Gagsy doesnt belong in a Nhl roster who wants to go somewhere, never mind have him instead of that black hole Spooner. The season is already destroyed and over so nothing to worry about!

Gags can be successful on a NHL roster, the problem for him is that he's needs such a specialised role in order to actually be a positive contributor. (Think of someone like Versteeg or DD as a comparable)

The good news for Sammy, with how under-skilled the forwards are, that niche is available for him.

Eberle will end up getting 24+ more points to finish out the year.

Gagner can be just fine in the roster, but only as a depth veteran (wow we are at that point), and we need to surround him with speedy young players. And of course he can help the PP, as a right handed specialist.
