ear buds worn WHILE playing

It's far from fancy or a world class facility/rink but my home rink plays music over a speaker system during warmups and in between whistles like an NHL arena does.

Way back when I used to be a beer league scorekeeper (because it gave me 50% off league fees!) they had an XM subscription so we could play music between whistles. I used to pass the time during live play flipping through channels looking for a good song, with an ear out for the whistle. It was great… nothing more satisfying than seeing someone’s face light up at a favorite song, or hear everyone laugh when the song fit the situation. And warmups are WAY better with the music pumping.

Point being, it doesn’t take much skill to pull this off and it adds a lot to the atmosphere. Rinks generally already have access to the music anyway, it’s just a matter of turning on the system. Most don’t bother.

I play pick up once in a blue moon with a group. One guy who's pretty new to hockey listens to music the whole time hes out there with wired earbuds. He's a super nice guy. It's also just flat out stupid. Wired or not.

Last thing I need is some big guy who already isn't great on his skates losing an extra sense out there to assist in running into people and hurting them or himself. To be fair though, Sidney Crosby could come out wearing airpods blaring Iron Maiden and I'd think that's stupid, too.

Wired? So his device is tucked inside his gear? Nope, can't see a single thing that could go wrong in that scenario.

Yeah. Like AirPods would be passable if you really, really feel the need for it for whatever reason but I think he had one of those running arm bands on with it inside of it and the wires rigged up his gear into his helmet.

I've seen some dumb shit at rec/beer league hockey but wearing earbuds/earphones, goalie or skater doesn't matter, it's right up there with some of the stupidest stuff I've seen. If I ran a skate I wouldn't let you do it quite frankly. Either take the earbuds out or go home.

In a free-flowing sport where inadvertent collisions happen all the time, I want you concentrating on what your doing and those around you, not listening to music and blocking out any audible signals.

Ever have a earbud in and have something hit you in the ear nice and hard and have that f***er drove in ? Lol it hurts like hell and the incident I saw that happen ( at work ) the contact was nothing like what is possible in a contact sport . That alone should make it a safety issue .

Lol I’m a forklift driver . The guy in question also was terminated afterwards. He was wearing an air pod .. which is definitely not allowed while driving . He also liked to smoke his lunch apparently because he failed his drug analysis. Basically he turned too wide going way too quick and clipped his forks against a beam . These are standup lifts so he wacked his head against the part that connects the overhead guard . AirPod messed his ear up pretty bad.

This is the kind of argument you expect to have with a
7 year old, not a grown adult.

You’re playing hockey. You need to be able to hear any communication going on around you. Subtracting a sense is dangerous.

It’s that simple.
So, deaf people shouldn't be allowed to play hockey because it's too dangerous?

It must be, which is why I'm gonna have to dumb it way down for you and @tarheelhockey ...

Since a deaf person would be welcome to play in the league, the ability to hear is not a requirement for participation, therefore, it shouldn't matter if the goalie is able to hear or not

It has nothing to do with accommodating a player, it's simply a matter of not worrying about something that's not worth worrying about...

No… it’s the matter that a deaf person has a restriction that they did not choose that should not prevent them from participating while the person who wants to wear earphones is choosing to disassociate. Like someone else said… a deaf person is going to be far more vigilant about non-verbal communication than a person who wants to distract themselves from noise by playing music.

You miss the point with your argument and it’s not a valid reason to support a goalie wearing earbuds

What accommodations are being made exactly?

In a game where they know a deaf player is playing, they will put more of an emphasis on the hand signals for stuff like JJ icing and otherwise.

We had a charity game where the jerseys were military green and military Sandy colored. When we discovered that a player in the game was red-green colorblind and therefore saw the two jerseys as identical, we flipped one inside out so it was white without design instead.

But to end… when you are playing a game that you know involves a deaf person… their four senses are working overtime to ensure they are getting the data they need. They are accustomed to getting the info they need to be safe and will have learned how to communicate without hearing. A person with AirPods in is actively distracting themselves and everyone else will simply assume they can hear.

As a goalie myself I just can't see why the hell you would want to?

If there's an odd man rush, I need to hear and communicate with my defenseman.
I need to hear the referee whether a play is icing or whether it's off-side.

And most importantly, I need to hear if the puck goes wide where it hit, off the glass, off the boards, where did it hit? And through screens, traffic, penalty killing, the sound of a shot or a hard pass, all of those things help you when you are trying to navigate through all of that, especially if you lose visual attachment to the puck.

How does someone's sense of taste and smell help keep them safe while playing hockey?

I also don't see how touch would factor in either, but I'm open to hearing how it would...

Your point also assumes this deaf person has perfect vision, but suppose they don't see so well either

Does a player with perfect vision who's listening to music really pose more of a risk to the safety of themselves and others than someone with poor vision who can't hear anything?

What about a deaf person with just one eye? Surely, they shouldn't be allowed to play, right?

I would think it's far more dangerous to operate a vehicle on the roadways, yet, every car has a stereo...

On a scale of 1 - 10, just how dangerous do you think it is for a player to wear earbuds during play?

The guy with the ear buds is distracted by music whereas the deaf guy is not.
Agreed. They're likely to become so distracted, they forget they're playing hockey, and break out into a figure skating routine

That's what killed Adam Johnson...
