One thing that has been a really nice development over the last few games is that Hamilton is starting to look like a top pairing dman. Great to see him level someone in front of the net last night...Can't remember who it was, but we haven't seen that kind of strong arm tactics from our backend in a while!

I'm really, really impressed by that first pairing. They compliment each other so nicely. Dougie is using his body; like I mentioned in another thread, he doesn't have to be a goon or anything but if he leans into people he does work just because of his size.

When they're on the ice I have 100% confidence; which is strange because even in the Gio-Brodie prime years over the past couple; it wasn't a sure thing for them to be defensive pillars... Dougie and Gio are MAJ together.

Honestly, I really hope they make a move to bring in another top 4 dman if we start to look like a playoff team.

I've been saying it for a while; this team certainly does need one more Dman that can play at a higher level.

In a perfect world:
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - X or X - Brodie because he can play both sides
Kulak - Wideman
Engelland

The issue is that they'll likely lose that other D to expansion; unless it's a rental.

The current defensive pairings have a major drop-off after #3. The 1-2 are beyond excellent. Brodie has struggled this year, and yet it still okay. after Brodie the drop off in D quality goes to fringe NHLer. Wideman is a 15-16 minute a night PP specialist. Engelland is a depth option who you can bring in for the tough ones, Jyrki is kind of a jack of all trades, master of none. He's a depth guy who needs a better skater to get him going; Kulak might be the best of the bunch when all is said and done, but he's still young and learning the game.

There would be a lot of benefit from having a defensive specialist out there.

Are there any realistic candidates for us to look at this year? Haven't looked into it yet

This team is better because Jankowski.

That team had Makarov as their Jankowski.

I've seen Brodie get blamed a lot for struggling. I'm not gonna pretend he's been elite, but it sure would be nice if he had a partner who could pull him up instead of keep him in the rut that he's in. Any chance the Islanders are selling on De Haan?

I'd say it's probably 2nd. There was a year we had Iggy, Cammy, Langkow, Huselius, Conroy, Regehr, Jbo. I feel like that was our best year to win, but our top 3 lines this year are all great. Very underrated if we can get playing well.

Further down than 2nd. Calgary had some deep teams in the early 90's that just couldn't get it done.

Amazing how much more productive Bennett is as a centre, especially when paired with some actual talent.

Sam Bennett is tied for the team lead in points.

Funny, Oilers fans are talking about Draisaitl "pulling away from Bennett"

Sam Bennett is 20 and will be all season into the playoffs. Leon Draisaitl has been 21 almost all season.

5v5
Sam Bennett - 1.48 Primary Points /60
Leon Draisaitl - 1.03 Primary Points /60

Sam Bennett - 2.22 Point /60
Leon Draisaitl - 1.71 Points /60

Bennett most common linemates (70+ minutes):Brouwer, Stajan, Chiasson, Versteeg
Draisaitl most common linemates(70+ minutes): Maroon, Lucic, Puljujarvi, McDavid

Power Play Points Not Assisted By Gaudreau or McDavid:
Sam Bennett: 2
Leon Draisaitl: 3

So much further ahead, that Draisaitl is.

We should build a time machine. Go back and get 18 year old Sam Bennett and take him back to the present so he can give 20 year old Sam Bennett advice.

Let's build a team comprised of nothing but Sam Bennetts at different ages

What age will he be able to PK though? Because that lineup would be in the box the entire season.

Man that win felt good. Crazy how much more confident the whole team looked on offence with Gaudreau back in the lineup. As far as missing a solid #4 dman, can anybody admit that Kris Russell isn't the hot garbage people thought he was? The D looked a lot better with him in than out.

Also I'm not sure we're a very deep team as things stand. We still need 3 or 4 players imo before we can call ourselves contenders, namely in RW and D

On paper this should be a playoff team, especially given the mess that the Pacific is. Not a good playoff team, but a playoff team. I'd put us on par with the 07-08 Flames in terms of quality

Dan Hamhuis
Calvin de Haan
Johnny Oduya
Micheal Stone

Are probably the four front-runners right now because of their current team struggles. Might be a few guys from Raleigh that may also be a potential trade bait; but I'd be worried about them because their defence looks better than it actual is due to play style.

Oduya would probably be the cheapest and is UFA after this year.

Bennett is going to be an absolute warrior in the playoffs if and when we make it back there.

This team was a garbage fire defensively last year. Russell would not be an improvement over anyone but Wideman.
