The New Jersey Devils, currently first in the Eastern Conference, locked up a key component of their team by signing second line center Jason Blake to a 4 year contract. Terms were not disclosed, although it is thought to be a major increase from the $487,500 that Mr. Blake will earn this season. Blake was consedered a fringe player in the HFNHL when the Devils signed him four years ago, but his constant hustle and kamakazi style has made him a fan favorite in the swamp, and he has proven to be a capable goal scorer and excellent penalty killer. Said GM Rich Epstein "Jason's contributions to this team go well beyond the scoreboard. He is that type of player that every winning team has, that can fire up the entire team when he steps on the ice and do all of the little things that help a team win games. We are very happy that Jason was willing to sign long term, and look forwards to him finishing his career in New Jersey."

Note: This leaves the Devils with only two potential UFAs next season, defenseman Murray Baron and winger Bill Lindsay. Neither is expected to return. The team will have some interesting decisions next season, with a nearly full lineup returning and several prospects ready to play.
