That’s disappointing. Hopefully it’s just a one off clunker and not some indication there are fundamental flaws with their effort level.
I think related to what you are saying here, it should be noted that, at one point in the 2nd period I think when we were down-3-0(again I think), Jack was yelling in frustration pretty loudly. I think it was more at himself then his team mates.

Did nothing to spark the team though.

Ten point gap at Thanksgiving. Yeesh.
If I remember correctly I think we had a 13 point gap on them at one point. They are going to regress a little while the Devils hopefully get their crap together.

That’s disappointing. Hopefully it’s just a one off clunker and not some indication there are fundamental flaws with their effort level.
The thing that bothers me is that they got embarrassed in five different ways on Saturday... and they came out and played their worst game of the year as a response.

I remember thinking we were on the clear upswing while the Rag's were on the downswing.

Only a matter of time till we took over.......
Progression isn’t always linear. Hopefully this start of the season (or this season if it continues like that) will be a good wake up call in year 2 of the window. Sort of like how losing to us in RD1 after leading 2-0 was apparently a wake up call for the Rangers.

Maybe that’ll even bring some changes. I believe in this core, but I think we’ll eventually need a new voice who brings in a simpler D structure, and we’ll also need better goaltending. We also have some young talented guys coming in eventually.

I just hope we don't have another year of "the goaltending is horrible" and then every suggested attempt to fix the goaltending via an "overpayment" is deemed stupid and a mistake.

Tampa Bay is running out Matt Tomkins and Jonas Johansson, it seems to be just the way teams work in 2023, as the goaltending market is so illiquid. Just have to accept it unless you think Erik Kallgren needs a run.

Edmonton is trying to add a goalie also, the market is not a fun one to participate in during the season which is why I do think Fitz deserves some criticism for identifying the goaltending needed support/improvement and then doing nothing.

Edit: Maybe Halak?

What an absolutely putrid and embarrassing game.

Jersey / helmet records...

Road Whites / white helmets 5-3 = 10 points

Home Reds 2-4-1 = 5 points

3rd Blacks 1-0 = 2 points

Road Whites / black helmets 0-1 = 0 points

Total 8-8-1 = 17 points

Nothing could’ve been done in that regard that would’ve moved the needle significantly. It’s unfortunately true.

The goaltending sucks ass, but the defensive system isn’t working this season. The coach seems hell bent on making it work though. There are 0 adjustments made. That pisses me off.

What didn't you like about the goals? They seemed pretty cut and dry cross ice wide open post to post chances to me.

He made some terrific saves.

I don't know what goalie in history earns the 0-0 shootout win tonight.
I would have liked a save on the second goal.

But again, we didn’t deserve to win. However, his insistence on playing Vitek yet again was gross foreshadowing.

But hopefully it’s for the best that Akira wasn’t subjected to the biggest no-show effort in over a year.

It’s time to give him some starts. Let him sink or swim and if he sinks then so be it. Vitek is irredeemable here and they’re playing him at a 63 game pace.

So now not even anything could be done in the offseason? A third goalie alone would help, with Schmid waiver exempt.

If we don't believe anything can be done at all, and these are the goalies we are working with then the only solution is to work around them, and play a team defense that leads to less cross ice passes and wide open shots in the slot. Basically the people saying the team defense needs to change are right, cause the poor goaltending is a simple fact of life that needs to be schemed around.

I don't think there was a goaltending options that would’ve moved the needle enough available this summer no.

New Jersey(No Fanz!)
we would have lost to an emergency back up goalie last night.

the wings got some bounces, sure, but they earned them by pressuring and working hard. we gave them those chances by not doing those things.

it really feels like the book is out on this team. coaches know how to prepare against us and it shows in how we are completely outclassed at even strength. we haven’t or can’t adjust.

i had serious hope that with jack and nico out, they would focus on tightening up defensively and limiting chances against. i have no idea why they didn’t adjust. for me that’s a big red flag that gives me concern for the season.

i wasn’t reactionary after the rangers game because i do think they played well for 55 minutes and they’re very much in the playoff hunt, but last night did not feel like watching the same team that we’ve watched the past year. it was the same lifeless, unconfident soft team that we watched for the last decade. utterly dominated by a mediocre team. my confidence in them is completely shaken
This is why I've started just DVR'ing the games now and only watching those that we won so I could actually ENJOY the game without having that sinking feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I hate this. A ton.

Maybe we need to start up the fire Lindy chats. It seemed to have gotten the team motivated last season.
If they come out and lose to Columbus, just wait until Saturday’s game and I guarantee we’ll hear some.

And if things goes bad enough you may even hear them before the end of the game.

I never thought I'd have experienced this low point that I am now with this team. Ok after it's 3-0 Detroit I'm expecting a 6-5 win and even if they did that you couldn't have taken this team seriously. Didn't get that even. They looked like the San Jose Sharks offensively and made Detroit look like 2003 Devils defensively. Let a Keith Kinkaid level goaltender get an easy shutout. Sure credit has to go to Detroit but, no f***ing way are they as good as the Devils made them look. If this shit carries into these home games. Some me heads to to roll!

We may have been spared as Columbus is one of the few teams that gives up more goals than us
don’t count your eggs before they hatch. let’s see what happens when the devils give up the first goal and their confidence craters
