I have never seen any footage before of the Devils' Oct. 1982 inaugural game, until I came across this archival gem from local NJ news:

If you fast forward to the 22:44 mark of this video, you can see the highlights. Don Lever scored the Devils' first goal, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie (against Pittsburgh)
