Since there isn't a season thread, I thought I would make one.

Our goal difference today would have been 16th best for all of last season.
On pace for a goal differential of +205.

That would not be a record...

11 under the record.
Coincientally, we are on pace for 205 goals against, down from 279, and I don't think this will rise that much. Historically, teams are not that great defensively at the beginning of the season.

only Boston allowed less than 213 goals against last year

9 teams are on pace for it right now with Arizona,Colorado, and Boston all currently on pace for less goals against than even the dominant season Boston had last year

yes scoring generally goes down a bit as the season goes on in an overall sense but numbers should still be sanity checked if you want to make projections

I was like WTF, Arizona? Had to look it up, they played 3 teams that are struggling on offense, NYI, Ducks, and Blues. Boston and CO both played the California teams and Chicago. Such a limited sample size, you gotta look at the teams they actually played against.

The Boston game Saturday will be a litmus test.

Is this the season we compete for cup? Next season Veleno, Raymond ,Seider , Sprong, Gost , Berggren, Fisher all needs new contracts, some will have big money increase. Don't believe Perron will be resigned .

Nice review of the Yzerplan and the Redwings chances in the Atlantic division

dknetwork.draftkings.com

‘The Yzerplan’ starting to work for the Red Wings early in 2023-24 NHL season

Detroit is 5-1-0 as we enter the second full week of the 2023 NHL season. We look at what that means for Red Wings’ playoff chances and future outlook.
dknetwork.draftkings.com
dknetwork.draftkings.com

The article is very optimistic on the Redwings chances in the division.

"Looking at the rest of the division, the Bruins are 5-0-0 but haven’t played anyone good. The Sens are off to a good start and should be in contention. The Maple Leafs entered as the favorite and should be in the top-3 most of the season but could run into issues in net and on defense. The Lightning, Canadiens, Sabres and Panthers are all underperforming early on. Other than the Bolts, none of those teams have as good defensive forwards as Detroit.

Boston should regress. Toronto will be the top competition, but Detroit should be better or on par with Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Florida and Buffalo. It’s not crazy to think the Red Wings can win the Atlantic Division after what we’ve seen."

At some point there will be a changing of the guard where the Leafs, Bolts and B’a all fade and the Sens, Wings, Sabres and Habs all rise. This is why I live the Wings in the East

Highly unlikely, but it would be funny as hell if we just randomly went wire to wire.

Bos, Det, Phi,and Mtl on top of the East just like everyone predicted.

the Flyers finished last October 5-2-1 and the year before 4-2-1 those guys straight up have an October dynasty on their hands

the league even tried to get sneaky the year before those years I mentioned by starting the season in January instead to try and stop them but they still managed to go 7-2-1 in January that year

I think we will know truer of where we are when DeBrincat levels down to a normal shooting percentage. He obviously isn't going to maintain this for that much longer. Right now we are riding high and we need to see how we are when we don't have a couple of guys on great hot streaks. Loving the start to the season absolutely, just tempering where we really are as a team.

They have been lucky on scoring, but even if we take that extra luck away, they still would have won the games, with just a tighter margin.

So that's a good sign. It's not luck, which is deciding games. It's just luck giving unneeded extra scoring. Big difference.

What they have really improved, is obviously the power-play, but there also other details on special teams.

Last season PP was 17th best at NHL (7.76 Goals for/60 on PP)
This season PP is 2nd best after NJD (20.14 GF/60 on PP)
NHL best at last season was Edmonton with 13,23 superior number.

So that Detroit PP jump for this season is obviously huge, but lucky and unsustainable. Still, if we look on power-play in expected goals, we see the real improvement.

Last season PP xGF/60 was 7.09 25th best (8th worst)
This season PP xGF/60 is 11.57 which is 4th best.

It's 63% better in xGF/60. Jump from the bottom8 to Top4. THIS is a huge thing.

This will probably predict, how we could keep relatively league TOP numbers. But not as good as the current numbers, because those are just too good numbers.

Also, another thing was short-handed goals against at last season.

Red Wings current xGA/60 on power-play is league-best, lowest numbers as 0.18. So they are taking better care better of SH goals threats.

Small detail, but one way to lose games. If you are league-best, it will definitely help.

At last season Red Wings was 4th worst team at giving up short-handed goals. And now they are league best in expected numbers. They are taking care about the details.

***

Then comes the penalty-kill.

Last season
- 18th best 8.10 GA/60 on PK
So kind of league average. Not bad numbers.

This season
- 10th best 5.06 GA/60 on PK.
Improving. Numbers are down and the ranking is climbing.

Goal tending has been great. Reimer keeping this up (questionable) plus Alex Lyon should allow Husso to get less starts and keep him fresher. At the very least, if we are looking at a playoff birth, we've got three goalie options and just need one to be hot.

If we're still looking good come Thanksgiving then I'll buy into the playoff hype
