Wings fans hate on Smith but he really isn't a bad hockey player. He just didn't become the top pairing guy we were hoping. Still a quality top 4 defenseman.

I don't think NYR was ever serious about trading for Shattenkirk knowing he'd be taking their call this summer. Smith is an upgrade on some of their D (sadly) so not a terrible pick up but an odd target, especially as a lefty and if they paid a 2nd+ that seems steep.

Honestly after Shattenkirk Smith's probably the next best D man on the market there's really only Quincey as well the Shattenkirk deal couldn't hurt what Smith will get here.

How? If it's a conditional 2nd that's a good trade for both teams. Rangers right side is abysmal and Smith picks it up in the playoffs
