Derek Ryan spears Nils Hoglander in the nuts, how is this not a 5 minute major penalty for attempt to injure?

You would have to hit a guy pretty hard with your stick to the nuts to hurt them. I have taken a shot from the point to the nuts during a penalty kill and I was okay. Maybe a spearing penalty on the play, but intent to injure might be a bit over the top, unless it was extremely vicious.

Ryan went for Cup and Bust.

Ummm…. Go watch everyone of the similar clips and you’ll see the players all fall down… you think they’re embellishing … and you think the offender is doing it expecting it to not hurt?

Edit: A cup protects different areas better and worse, and the 40mph muffin you took in beer league is not a good barometer.

Ya like McDavid is running around throwing cheap shots eh. Take the goggles off. Van is dirty like a Hasting back ally.
Yah, Hoglander was running around being dirty all series before this…

Just making a dumb point to a dumb point.

Or don’t run around starting shit if you aren’t ready to face the consequences. That’s still a core operating principle in the sport of hockey.

Do you have the same argument for what happened to McDavid? He messed around or 'started shit' like you say; but I'm guessing you have some sort of goal post shifting double standard here.

Only partially joking, but doesn't the league have some liability here if they fail to react against harassment?

Unwanted genital contact is a bright line for workplace harassment.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, the NHL hasn't exactly taken a hard line against that sort of thing. Marchand used to lick people. That was pretty gross and risked spreading diseases or who knows what, yet the NHL did practically nothing about it.

They also set a pretty bad precedent for situations like in the OP. I'm pretty sure Sidney Crosby didn't even get a fine for slashing a guy's nuts:

Why would you guess that?

To me, everything that happened between McDavid and Soucy was fair game. Soucy got the first shot in, McDavid got his slash in, Soucy comes back with a crosscheck. All of that… whatever.

The problem is Zadorov coming in unprompted as the third man, getting saucer eyes when he sees the back of that 97 jersey, and deciding it’s a freebie cheap shot opportunity. Zadorov’s big-brain moment converted a nothing scuffle into a suspendable incident. Soucy is paying the price for being on the same team as a dummy.

A spear to the nuts is a cheap shot. Doesn't matter if it's provoked or not it has no place in the game. Trying to justify its action because Hoglander rubbed him out in the boards isn't based. The idea he 'had it coming' is a psychotic philosophy.

Stupidest debate ever.

Spearing in the nuts has no place in hockey. This isn't a debate about life consequences its about not spearing dudes in the nuts.

Right, no place for it in hockey, which is why he was called for a penalty.

I’m sorry your team didn’t conveniently benefit from troll antics, and had to settle for 4-on-4 rather than otherwise being on the PK for Hoglander’s nonsense.

Why are you going so far as to excuse what should've happened (a 5 minute penalty) but didn't with that spear? Is spearing someone in the nuts not "nonsense"? You seem intent on blaming Hoglander for Ryan's overreaction, seems you have a fair amount of bias here.

You condone a spear to the nuts because he's a Canuck. May as well say it you have a terrible argument just want to make it personal.

What bias? I have zero dog in this fight.

No ref in their right mind is going to hand a team a major power play and possible suspension in a playoff series as a reward for taking runs at guys behind the play. That’s what this is about, take it or leave it, but that’s how hockey works.

Why the hell would I have something personal against the Canucks of all teams?

Ask yourself honestly — between the two of us, which one is far more likely to be arguing from competitive emotion?
