Derek Ryan spears Nils Hoglander in the nuts, how is this not a 5 minute major penalty for attempt to injure?

Lots of dirty stuff happens in a hockey game.
Al least they didn't totally miss it & he, at least, got a penalty.

What? How is there equivalence between those two plays? A spear to the nuts should be an auto 5 and a game and Hoglander's play should be a 2 minute minor for cross-checking/interference. Give me a break.

For the same reason that if you skate up to someone and glove-punch him in the face during play, you’re getting 5+game+suspension, but if someone chases you down just to crosscheck you behind the play and then you glove-punch him, you’re getting 2 minutes.

Before you snap into a rebuttal, take a second to read the above and fully absorb that this is the reality of how things are called in the sport of hockey. There’s a bunch of rat players in this game, and they provoke opponents to do things that would be called major penalties out of context. Referees see that, and they downgrade the retaliation penalty in context of the provocation.

Hoglander is fine. He’s wearing a cup. He’s going to get scratched next game because his play is crap, not because he’s injured. The ref isn’t throwing someone out of a playoff game and awarding a major penalty over something like this. That’s just the way it is.

When has spears in the nuts become a non issue?

The play before is irrelevant when it comes to the penalty for Ryan. Its a 5 on Ryan and a 2 on Hoglander.

Any other call is a mockery of the game and the actual rules the refs are supposed to rule by!

bro the guy just lost 2 what kinda sociopath would consider making his life any worse there? think we can let any penalty on him go

My point is that they are not equivalent offenses. Get out of here with this condescending BS.

No Nuts, so there is nothing there to injure.
Yeah, he only made it to the NHL as a smaller player and had to process the grief of losing his 1 year older sister when he was only 12 years old, but yeah, he has no nuts. Fornicate off.

Restating your point does what exactly? I just showed you where two offenses can be identical and receive completely different outcomes based on context. If Ryan randomly does this to someone for no reason, he’s thrown out of the game. But it wasn’t for no reason, it was a direct response to getting mugged behind the play. It all happened right in front of the ref, who softened the call on Ryan as an acknowledgment of the full situation.

Any ref in any sport will do some version of this, but in hockey it’s especially pronounced because junk like what Hoglander did isn’t part of other sports. If the refs hit guys with a 5+game for responding to cheap crap behind the play, they’re just unleashing the Corey Perrys and Nick Cousinses to run around taking whacks at superstars to try and draw retaliation. The refs aren’t going to do that.

If you don’t agree with this, it honestly doesn’t matter. The game is called the way it is for a reason. Hoglander is a pro and he should have known he wasn’t getting any special protection there.

What Hoglander did happens literally 15 times a game or more. What doesn't happen 15 times a game or more is a spear in the nuts to retaliate for it. You don't need to type three paragraphs every time. Also how does calling a spear by the rule book "unleash the Corey Perrys and Nick Cousinses" on the world? Maybe don't spear a guy in the nuts as retaliation if you don't want a 5 minute penalty (in a properly officiated game)? We wouldn't be having this dumb argument had Ryan chosen any other way to get his two cents in.

No, it literally doesn’t. He didn’t finish his check, he chased Ryan down from behind after the puck was way long gone, just to throw a crosscheck and try to scurry to the bench before Ryan could retaliate. That goes beyond your typical playoff sandpaper.

As a Vancouver fan you should already know the answer to this. What does it look like when the best players on the ice are afraid to retaliate against a rat?

Calling the game to that standard renders it unplayable, and would be an embarrassment to watch.

Or don’t run around starting shit if you aren’t ready to face the consequences. That’s still a core operating principle in the sport of hockey.

It's not surprising. The Oilers are a dirty team. They get away with murder, but if you breathe on McDavid the arm goes up faster than a woman walks through downtown Edmonton.

There is no snow in Edmonton yet, the woman shouldn't be walking that fast.

This is ridiculous. Calling a spear to the nuts a 5 minute major as it should be has no effect like this. You're being purposely obtuse.

Just saw this will seeing if there was a thread with McD hit. My goodness, that's cheap!!! Any Face, head, or neck hit is not good, but nutcracker shots are real uncool. Some folks just can't play or be straight-up can they?

Slashing is a swinging motion.

Spearing is a thrusting or jabbing motion involving the blade.

There is literally nothing in the rule book that describes the direction of motion involved in a spear.

To me that looks like a jabbing motion. He should have been assessed a bigger penalty but the league likes to manage the game and it's noot now.

The mental gymnastics used to defend this play and whataboutism over missed crosschecks Is getting a little tired.
