Need Clarkson and Bolland at the top of thier games......for the playoffs. As it is at the moment both are pretty much non-factors contribute nothing and remain huge question marks going forward. So it can be argued the Leaf's may be better off without them. I do hope both are ready for the play-offs but I am not feeling too confident about it.

Bolland has a long history of being an impact in the playoffs. If he's healthy (big if), he'll make something happen.

Clarkson, on the other hand, does not have any history of being a positive impact in the playoffs. Counting on that is likely a false hope.

Two of Toronto's most glaring weaknesses are a total lack of leadership and a serious void of players with any defensive acumen. If you think the Leafs are "probably better off without Bolland" then you dramatically misjudge the needs of this franchise.

Leadership doesn't have to come from Bolland exclusively. The guy is very injury prone and wants a lot of money. What's stopping them from getting another leader elsewhere?

He may not be in game shape.

If he was refusing to play im sure the Leafs would suspend him.

True enough. But if he has been cleared to play for a bit now, you would think he would of been able to get into game shape by now. Guess he would be the only one to know and decide that.

If you think guys that play a solid two way game, offer leadership and have Stanley Cup experience are readily available then we have a very different read on the free agent market.

What's happening with this guy? Apparently he is cleared to play, but choosing not too. Not sure what to make of that.

This is standard protocol for all teams. Being medically cleared to play and feeling ready to play aren't mutually exclusive. It's not like he's cleared to play but sitting at home. He's travelling with the team, taking part in practices and working one on one with the skating coach. He's doing his part to get back to the team, it's just unfortunate that it's taking this long.

We need a good two-way line that could better compliment the top pairing. The rush-based strategy won't work well against top lines. Bolland plays a North-South game as does Clarkson and one of Holland/ Raymond/ Lupul could be tried on the wing. Such a line would better sheltered the depth scoring line and make the top line more effective on the counter-attack.

He'll get his $4 million, second-line, money IMO.

There's a big difference between being "CLEARED" to play and being READY to play.

Of course by now he's cleared to play hockey, but with this injury comes a fair bit of adjustment time. By the doctors standards he's able to play. From a team and personal stand point I can understand why he wouldn't want to be a defensive liability out there.

Hopefully he's able to come back 100% within the last 6 games of the season...

This is getting testy. If I'm the agent I tell Dave to take a seat for the rest of the year. Him playing this season doesn't stand to benefit him whatsoever.

at $4 million i would consider resigning him. over $4 million it gets pricey. also depends on the term. i suspect he is looking for at least 5 years maybe 6 or 7

Nonis is between a rock and a hard place with this one. Re-sign a guy who's barely played a year before he becomes a UFA, or let him test the waters and possibly lose him and the assets used to get him for nothing? I suppose it all depends on the price.

Tough situation, this could be Brian Leetch all over again.

If I'm Bolland I just worry about cashing the cheques. He has his cups (and glory of scoring winning goal), time to make as much money as possible.

Some GM (at least 1, there always is) will give him the contract he wants based on reputation, even if he comes back and doesn't play well. Teams are always looking for a Dave Bolland.

Year along rental then, Nothing to lose sleep over. He could've played the whole season to this point and we would still have to re-sign him to something that's probably not going to work for some who slots into the 3rd line centre spot.

But the 2nd and two 4ths we gave up is the least of our worries with this situation, How he could help this team now and in the coming weeks is however.

I have a feeling we'll see him in the last few regular season games, if not, the start of the playoffs.

My only problem is that we need him NOW.

I keep seeing the word "playoffs" thrown around as if it's a foregone conclusion that they'll be in them.

He's still having issues in practice. Being medically cleared to play means he's green lit for contact and full practice. There's a major gap between that and being able to play at an NHL-capable level in NHL games. If you know Dave Bolland at all, he would be out there if he felt he could play.

Bolland wants to play, just doesn't want to risk longterm career-impacting injury. I don't blame him.

He'll play when he's ready.

Nonis is an idiot for wasting three draft picks on an injury prone depth player in the first place. Bolland got injured as expected and this move is looking much worse now because Bolland will sign with another team or Nonis will sign him to a contract he does not deserve like he did with Clarkson.

I don't care if he doesn't play again this year. I will very much care if Nonis gives him any sort of long term deal.
