Carolina Hurricanes goalie Dan Ellis keeps getting knocked down by injuries, only to get back up.

Last season, while playing for the Anaheim Ducks, he tried to play through a groin injury, only to suffer a severe muscle tear. He had abdominal surgery. He had surgery for a sports hernia.

“It put a lot of question marks around my health and my ability to be able to play again,†Ellis said. “Honestly, I wasn’t sure that I could play myself.â€

An unrestricted free agent after the season, Ellis found himself without a team before the 2012-2013 season and wondered if his career might be at an end at 32. He was determined it wouldn’t be, a big reason he’s the Hurricanes’ nominee for the 2013 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

I would like to see Ellis gone and I think he may be. A decent back-up is crucial for next season so we'll see what transpires. That said, Peters gets ragged on but really hasn't played that bad for what he is. Yes he has been weak at times, but, he has also come up with some good games and some big saves. I think he has shown some potential and if worked with perhaps he can improve to the point that he may earn that back-up role. Who knows? It's possible. He has been left out to dry with this defence. Him improving along with the defense and that goalie situation may be alright if Ward plays solid and can stay healthy.

The problem with Peters is that if anything hes letting in less goals than he should be with his performances. He looks lost in net in the NHL. You can see half the time he doesn't even realize hes stopped the puck and just stops moving out there. When the puck is behind the net he is routinely guarding the wrong side of the net and loses track of the people in front of him. He is fine for the AHL but if hes the backup next year I will be very disappointed.

I don't remember if it was on here or 'Canes Country Blogspot that we had a debate of Manny Legace vs. Peters after Ward went down from Rick Nash's skate.

All I remember is that most wanted Peters because he was younger, myself included (or maybe I wanted Legace, I can't remember).

Peters is an NHL backup at best. He can put together some good games against weaker teams, but otherwise he blows. Having him in the AHL as an injury call up is fine by me.

Peters is fine as the emergency backup you stash in Charlotte. Any more than that is pushing it.

There are dozens of goalies running around the AHL and Europe who are at least as good as Peters. There is absolutely no sense in retaining a player who has repeatedly shown that he can't handle the NHL and isn't showing signs of growing into it.

Well, congratulations to Dan Ellis. He seems like a heckuva nice guy and i wish him well. If he could ever play consistently the way he has shown in stretches, he could be a fine backup.

Peters is in his seventh pro season. He's played over half a season's worth of NHL games with a well-below league average .900sv% (Cam Ward's sv% in this time span is .917 and the league average is .912). Any "improving" he was going to do has likely already been done. I don't think he's improved whatsoever since his first call-up three years ago. He still is ridiculously shaky every game, looking like he has absolutely no clue what is going on. He overreacts to every little thing that happens on the ice, leaving gigantic portions of the net open and often losing track of the puck. He *never* has good games, ever---the other team's shooters simply have bad ones.

I agree wholeheartedly with this.

Besides, Ellis has fought through the adversity of a low-paying NHL job with obvious aplomb.

Not sure Ellis will overcome the result of his rant and calling out the team and it's "super stars" like he did. That seemed to be a turning point for him with Muller and the team. Some thought he was right at the time but he was off base in a number of ways. I would not be surprised if Ellis is a goner. IMO he will be out of there and they will look for a goalie by next season. If Peters played half decent Ellis wouldn't have started another game this year.
