Colton Sissons with the most consequential empty net miss ever?

Yeah, watching the last seconds, the Preds gave the Canucks enormous time and space up high to move the puck around without pressure, and somehow also coupled that with having no one down low near Boeser as he took two cracks at the open cage.

That's where the collapse happened. You don't need an empty netter to win.
The Forwards tried to compensate for Nyqvist putting himself out of the play, so it became a 6 on 4 basically. More room for the Canucks to move the puck.

Preds and Isles have played their opponents touch. At worst, really should be a tied series.
But, both down 3-1 heading on the road.

Preds will rally around Sissons and win this in 7. This is their U2 Sphere moment for the playoffs.

Not even the first time this has happened in a Canucks playoff game.

Granted, Calgary won that one in OT.

For a similar outcome — two years ago, Garnet Hathaway hit the post while trying to put the Caps up 3-1 in the series. Florida came back to tie the game and series, sparking their run to the Finals.

Maybe the biggest one — 1989 Finals, Joe Mullen picks up the puck in the neutral zone with a ton of empty ice ahead of him to easily put Montreal away and lead the series 2-1. Instead he panics and shoots early, winging the puck wide of the net from the blue line, and Montreal comes right back down to tie, then win in 2OT to reverse the series lead. Bizarrely, Mullen came really close to the exact same scenario in Game 4 when he slammed the puck off the post while shooting in the exact same spot and circumstances, keeping the Habs alive a second time and potentially costing Calgary the Cup altogether, but he finally vindicated himself a moment later by scoring on a clean breakaway that only Patrik Stepan could have missed.

Incidentally, bringing this back to the present day, when Mullen scored on that breakaway he skated right up to the crease and put it in with a hard wrister. Montreal didn’t like that move, and it ended up sparking a line brawl. So as a second “history repeats itself” item, there’s a 35 year old example of players policing the opponent’s energy of scoring an ENG.

The way the Canucks played for the last few minutes, even if Sissons scored the Canucks still might've tied it up, Sissons missed with around two minutes left. Lindholm scored after one minute of overtime.

I think Stepan was the worst empty net miss ever, but I think Sissons may be the worst when combined with the consequential nature of it. It took me 24hrs to even be able to look at a sports new site/forum.

Same here. This is exactly what I thought about when reading the title of this thread. Nothing will ever top this.

Again, that’s definitely the most viral, and was the worst actual attempt along with this one:

But it was a regular season game and didn’t affect that season much. In a weird, backwards way it had a huge impact on the draft, but that’s not what people think of when they see that clip.

I’m saying Sissons’ miss is potentially more impactful for his team and these playoffs. They could be tied 2-2 against injured goalies, and Saros could get ‘em on a MTL+ sorta run. Instead it’s 3-1, and Vancouver might be able to get a healthy DeSmith back in net at a more opportune time. That makes them a tougher matchup in the next round- I’m obviously projecting ahead a bit here, but it’ll be interesting to think of how things could have been different had that shot been half an inch to the left.

As a Sabres and Bills fan, you have my earnest sympathy. Can relate to the heartbreak, you learn to accept your own shadenfreude after awhile.

I don't blame Sissons for missing at that angle, on his backhand and with two Canucks nearby. I do kind of wish (maybe in hindsight) that he'd passed to his teammate who was wide open in the middle of the ice, though. There was no guarantee that the pass would've been successful, but it might've been easier to pull off than hitting the empty netter, himself.

t had consequences for Edmonton and Chicago. If Stefan scores Edmonton doesn't get the extra point for the OT loss which bumps Edmonton behind Chicago in the standings. Chicago doesn't win the draft lottery which means no Kane and maybe no Cups. Edmonton drafts Kane which probably makes them competitive enough to not draft all their 1st overalls as well as Nurse and Draisaitl.

So technically it could be the most consequential empty net miss.
I appreciate you explaining this story. As a Blues fan I hate it, would never read again lol

Yeah, absolutely terrible. Backhand from so close by, no interference or anything, and the guy can't hit the empty net. Embarrassing. Even I would have hit that. Hundred times out of a hundred.
Seriously I don't think that many people here would have scored that goal with the 2 defenders there and on the backhand what a hot take.

I'd be more upset about the fact that he shot it instead of passing it to the open Pred to his right. But it happens, they likely wouldve won had he scored but there were alot more errors that led to the tying goal, Sissons hitting the post isnt even near the top of that list imo.
