Close, but Chicago takes it. They beat essentially the same roster in 2013, and are a much tougher out than any of the teams the 2012 Kings murdered on the way to their cup.

In terms of raw talent, I think the 2014 Kings were the better of the two cup winning Kings rosters. That team just had more depth, more speed, and they beat MUCH tougher opposition. Arguably the toughest road to a cup in the cap era.

Pretty much this. To add on, the Blackhawks also beat a Bruins team that at their best also belonged in the same conversation as the multi cup winning Hawks, Kings and Pens of that era.

I wish the poll results were closer, because this really isn't an easy choice. But I went with Chicago.

The way they torched the playoffs, the 2012 Kings would have been poised to upset a lot of teams in the bracket. Too bad they got stacked against this Hawks team which was an absolute wagon and a strong contender to win the tourney.

Surprised to see this so one sided, did you all sleep through the 2012 playoffs :sarcasm:

That Kings team coasted through 4 rounds, it's close but I'm taking them

Not really that surprising. We saw about as close as you can get to this matchup in the 2013 Conference Finals, and Chicago won in 5. Combine that with the fact that LA was mediocre in the regular season and got hot in the playoffs, and Chicago massacred the 2013 regular season (albeit shortened), it’s clear why people think there’s a difference. That said, it is a pretty small one, just distinct based on what we have to look at. If someone gets hot in a 7 game series, who knows what happens?

LA got unlucky in the seedings:

Chi 2013 vs LAK 2012

and

Chi 2010 vs LAK 2014

This is just a result of winning the Cup two years where their regular season win% was not very high, 13th and 16th out of 16 champs.

I feel like a much better seeding for this format is playoff win%

I wouldnt have a problem with it, but there would be a bunch of ties. Lots of clusters of teams in the tourney with the same playoff record.

Regular season win% has turned out well considering every higher seed has won so far in R1. I think it may also show that our perception of great teams is reinforced by how much they dominate in the regular season. Should be some very good odds for upsets in the Quarterfinals, though. Chi 2013 vs TBay 2020 will be a good one. Det 2008 vs Ana 2007 will also be interesting.

No upsets in R1 yet but Pitt 2017 vs Chi 2015 might be our first.

Counter argument: the Kings in 2013 were banged up pretty badly and not playing close to the same level they played in 2012, a shortened season is not as much of a grind so less impressive to win the cup IMO, and the Hawks almost lost to a mediocre Red Wings team which I think the 2012 Kings would have destroyed.
