There's not really a myth of the point system keeping teams in it longer.

The point system is pure marketing. It literally, and I mean literally, defines every team in about the 25th percentile up to the 50th percentile as "teams over .500"

When you are .500 in the NHL you are about 24th or 25th out of 32 teams. What they are doing is exactly like Raiders of the Lost Ark. Amazing movie, and Stephen Spielberg was so confident that the audience lacks knowledge and critical thinking ability, put a 5,000 foot cliff between the town of Tanis where the ark is discovered and Cairo. Tanis is in the Nile river delta area. the elevation change is about 80 feet. But there is a 5,000 foot cliff for Nazis to plunge off the side of because he knows no Americans know anything about geography. The NHL did the same thing using math, hockey fans are not able to handle elementary math. I wish that weren't true but it absolutely is.

It's not really about the timing of when a team gets eliminated, it's so that all the employed hypesters (who call themselves, and I swear this is true, "journalists") can yap about how such and such a team is close, they are above .500. Almost there. The NHL fears most having a constant series of teams on the brink because they suck. So they Spielberged everyone and there are no journalists to even bring up a point that 6th grade math students should grasp if they are paying attention in class.

Blackhawks eliminated by the NHL system. On every other system they have a chance:
IIHF: maximum points 102/current last playoff spot 102 (can beat the tie-breaker)
No SO/No OTL: 68/66
No SO/OTL 1p: 72/71
Wins/Losses: 68/64
No OT: 68/68 (can beat the tie-breaker)
RW 2, OTW 1: 63/59
RW 3, OTW 2, SOW 1: 96/89
Blackhawks haven't had a chance in any league since 2017

Just a guess here but Islanders probably would be in the thick of things if we didn't have OT and awarded 1 point to both teams after 3 periods. But if it was a 3 point system for win(3), OT/SO win(2) OT/SO lose(1) we would basically be to far out at this point.

As it stands now We are tied with Philly but they have more Regulation wins, so we are the 2nd wild card but Caps and red Wings have a game in hand on us where even if they get 1 point they overtake us.

Lightning clinch by the NHL information. That is due to some catching teams having games against each other.

I haven't made such calculations for all teams so I don't mark it such just to keep it in line with other systems.

Oilers clinch:
- NHL system
- IIHF system
- No shootout, no OTL point
- No shootout, 1 point for OTL
- Wins/Losses
- 2 for RW, 1 for OTW/SOW
- 3 for RW, 2 for OTW, 1 for SOW

Maple Leafs clinch:
- NHL system
- Wins/Losses

Lightning clinch
- IIHF system
- Wins/Losses
- No overtime
- 2 for RW, 1 for OTW/SOW
- 3 for RW, 2 for OTW, 1 for SOW

This post hasn’t aged well lol
Why. it's still a turtle vs snail race
Flyers have won 5 of last 17 and lost their last 7 straight , and are still in the thick of it. Wings did basically same thing.
🐌 🐢 🐌 🐢
Caps just lost at home to the Sens who were on the end of a back to back. Their 6th straight loss.
Who's taking Pens out this season?.....the Tanking Hawks again or maybe the Sharks?

So the race for the second Eastern wild card would actually be much tighter right now with a 3-2-1-0 point system (WSH/DET/NYI/NJ/PHI 5-way tie, BUF only 1 point behind).

For playoffs, the 60min regulation only win-loss-draw system is the best and most predictive one.

A middle ground system is the three-point system that awards 3 points for regulation wins. It effectively makes regulation performance three times as important as OTSO performance.

And then the worst system of them all is the one NHL uses that for some reason gives massive weight to OT and SO performance even though they aren't relevant in playoffs. Leads to good regulation teams getting eliminated while OTSO merchants get in and then are unable to take advantage of the things that got them to the playoffs in the first place.
