While I respect the legacy he's carried with the US team, let's not mince words - Cheli was old 4 years ago. This guy is in the 3rd pairing of D for Detroit.
Why not Leetch? He's 7 years younger, carries just as much (if not more) respect and leadership qualities for his tenure manning the blue. Mara, who next to Leetch, is arguably the most astonishing pass of all, has the size and speed and obviously the skill that would seem an obvious choice to help this team to see a medal. Martin seemed a shoo-in based on the stalwart like play he's displayed this season being as green as he is.
Picking Chelios for some sentimental PR play to a handful of middle aged fans hoping to see a glimmer of magic from this golden age personality likely incapable of delivering on those hopes, was a dumb play IMO. After all, the idea is to win right?
