No honorary one day contract so that Cheechoo can retire as a Shark? I recall they did that with Dan Boyle.

Dan Boyle expected to retire as a Shark on Wednesday

Maybe because this is during the season? But even then, it's not like he needs to be signed to a real NHL contract.
Yeah, I'm a little surprised they're not doing the 1 day retirement contract. Nolan signed mid-season from what I recall, and I remember Nabby signed the 1 day contract after being waived by Tampa in the middle of the season.

All these articles are going to do is downplay the significance his injuries had on his career in an attempt to make his season sound like an anomaly. The guy was on his way to a great career before his injuries.

Cheechoo was getting slower thanks to the injuries, but not only would some of that happened with age, but the league was also getting faster. Fewer PPs for Cheechoo to feast on, a team refocus on playing defense...I don't think he would have remained a top-6 forward for long.

Double ot seriea winner Ray Whitney, baby

Bob Errey as well.

Errey wore #12.

My notes on #14: Steve Bozek, Jonathan Cheechoo, Patrick Marleau, Ray Whitney

According to hockeyreferences, Errey wore 14 during the 1996-97 season but I thought he wore 22 when he came back to the Sharks that year.

From the recent Merc article
Thornton was simply a machine, with 92 points over the final 58 games of that year. Cheechoo had 49 goals and 29 assists in that same span. His 56 goals for the year were two better than Jagr, and four more than Kovalchuk and Ovechkin.
49 in 58 is nuts. Has anyone come that close to 50 in 50 since then?

I wanna say that Crosby was pretty close in that year he was injured. He was on a stupid pace points wise anyways
